Re: Coordinators needed
Ironically, I think Tony Dungy's defense would be the perfect foil for the modern NFL offenses. When Tony was here I remember his emphasis on smaller, faster DL and LBs, lots of stamina. All 11 guys could pursue side line to side line. All 11 guys on defense would surround the ball carrier so they could cut off his retreat. I think the Vikings D could stop a lot of these YAC if they just did that simple thing.
Anyway, whoever is going to be the next DC. I hope they bring that Tony Dungy type of defense with them.

Re: Coordinators needed
Am I the only one who is getting exhausted reading all the arguments about things that haven’t even happened yet? I signed on as a life long fan of the home town team in 1961. I’m committed to watching them through thick and thin and there has been a helluva lot of that going on 61 years. Some years like ‘76 I thought for sure we would win it all. Other years have been hard to watch. I think depending on how much of a rebuild we undertake this could be more of a rebuilding year. I think the true impact of these hires is about three years out.
One thing I’m sure of is that I’m over the “grumpy old man” style of coaching and like our new look. I go back to the days when players would smoke cigarettes on the bench so the game and approach has changed dramatically. Some players had a reputation for partying all night and playing big games with killer hangovers. The game as well as everything about it has changed and left the older coaches in the dust. They’re grown men working a job, not high school or college players the coach has to discipline and teach lessons to like children. Some players can be a problem but they can be dealt with individually without coaches treating players like they’re in some kind of military boot camp. Any veterans remember punishments like “bows and toes”? Some of these old coaches still operate on that principle and it didn’t work the last eight seasons. I like the direction they’re going but my crystal ball is broken so no prognostications. Sometimes it’s fun to just sit back and see what happens and go with the Flo. I started out as a Baltimore Colts and Johnny Unitas fan before the Vikings arrived so if I abandon the hometown team there are 31 other choices.
I am enjoying the ride this off season. It’s not often that I can watch this much Vikings content in February and be thinking more about the Vikes than who is playing in the Super Bowl. From an entertainment standpoint it’s a great offseason watching everything unfold. We could have been still sitting around wondering what Rick was going to do in the draft and banking on Zims promise to turn things around. Considering the prospect of sitting through another year of that things are looking pretty good.

Re: Coordinators needed
I understand your point, and obviously results matter. I just think fans in general put way too much emphasis simply on if a defense or offense was lights out with their coordinators. Players are important. Players who fit the system are even more important. Coaches don't simply forget how to coach. It's why you see coordinators with very good units, and then poor units. Sure, it's their jobs to get the most out of what they have. But if you don't have the Joes, the X's and O's become less of a factor.VikingsFan84 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 09, 2022 10:54 amI hope Vikings do not hire Desai, the Bears defense have not been good
This isn't a dig on you. Just my general opinion when coaching and coordinator hires come up. Same reason guys like Leslie Frazier was a great DC. Gets a head coaching job that by all accounts was pretty mediocre. Gets fired, and as it usually goes gets another DC job. He's doing excellent for the Bills (who have great players and a great defense) and now his name is being mentioned as a possible head coach again.
Just something I always find interesting is all.

Re: Coordinators needed
It is really hard to tell how good the Bear's D is with how bad their offenses have been. DVOA had them as the 13th best defense last season and DVOA tends to be better at predicting how good a defense is versus scoring or yards.VikingsFan84 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 09, 2022 10:54 amI hope Vikings do not hire Desai, the Bears defense have not been good
For instance, the Bucs D was 6th in DVOA in 2019, but were the 4th worst in PPG because their QB was constantly giving the opposing team great field position. DVOA told us that with a better offense and a QB who didn't constantly turn it over, the Bucs could be great on D, and the next season when that happened, sure enough, they were great.
That being said, the Bears fell from 8th to 13th in DVOA when Desai took over and that isn't exactly a glowing endorsement.

Re: Coordinators needed
I really hope everyone in charge works hard at finding the best staff money can buy. I always feel like they start out slow and behind the 8 ball. I think we basically had poor coaches while Rick/Zimmer were here, and it showed, esp. on the defense.
Look at teams McVay and his coaching tree used for coaches. Now everyone wants to hire them to coach for better positions. It means so much, the assistant coaches. Make the player work out until they are about to drop. Maybe them understand the playbook until they fall a sleep.
Talk to individual players, make sure even the 2nd and 3rd strings get to practice with both the good coaches and the 1st string players. The new rookies, esp. the ones picked in the late round, are still going to be in awe and shock of the US Bank Gym and stuff. And players like JJ, AT, Cook, O'neil, Irv, Kendricks, Hunter, Peterson (hopefully) Smith, etc. They have to feel like they belong and have every right to be there. It should be a very exciting off season and practices, until the start of the season (which all of us can hardly wait for).

I just believe you get the position by merit. I was a manger once and it was so hard. All the rules you had to follow. Like hiring a women to run a folder, and she couldnt move the paper over to it alone. Or empty it. Or lift up 20 pound rollers to get underneath and clear up jams. She had to have help for everything. Always interrupting people who were all ready working on something. Its one thing to help someone, its entirely different when you want them to get half of your work done for you.vikeinmontana wrote: ↑Wed Feb 09, 2022 12:03 pmI understand your point, and obviously results matter. I am a business owner with bars and liquor stores in Montana. It's probably why I have the opinions I do. From the outside looking in, business is thriving. I have had the number one selling liquor store in the entire state for 10+ years in a row. Business has never been better. Thanks Covid!
But internally, it's never as easy as we make it look with a good staff. And it's never been as bad as it may look when we're short-staffed and dealing with never-ending supply chain issues. Sometimes my staff makes me look brilliant because they are so good. Sometimes my hands are a bit tied because finding quality people is difficult. But the business plan has never changed.
I feel this is the case with any job you can think of. Sports are just different because it's one of the few jobs that everyone has an interest in. And politics I suppose. No one cares about the owner of a liquor store. If someone came in here and I was short-staffed and out of product they may walk away thinking this is the worst store they've stepped foot in. However, when supply chains come back and people decide to work again, we run a tight ship and people rave about us. But I need good people, and everything to run smooth for that to happen. One kink in the chain can make a business look bad. Sports are no different. If a guy has studs on the roster that buy into the system, his offense/defense can look excellent and he in turn looks like a coordinator of the year. If there is turmoil in the ranks, little cohesion, and injuries to boot, suddenly that same guy doing the same things can look incompetent.

I'm wondering why they didn't go after Fangio. Fangio did interview for the Jaguars HC job, but now is drawing interest from the Dolphins as DC.vikeinmontana wrote: ↑Wed Feb 09, 2022 12:39 pm https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/332 ... ources-say

The #Vikings are hiring Ed Donatell as their next defensive coordinator, according to a league source.
Also: Andre Patterson has been hired as DL coach by the NYG.
