More like the fans’ heads may explode, Zimmer could not care less since he is not with Vikings anymore
No kidding, Defillipo helped turn a top 10 offense with a backup QB into a bottom 10 one.VikingsFan84 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 06, 2022 9:43 pmMore like the fans’ heads may explode, Zimmer could not care less since he is not with Vikings anymore
You all beat me to it, but speaking of guys with whom KOC is familiar … yes, John DeFilippo.40for60 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 06, 2022 4:51 pmTrue. I don’t know how this works, but don’t you think KOC has talked to assistants he is interested in and has let them know? But that’s not a sure thing, just as KOC could still back out- it’s happened before with Josh McDaniels (coincidentally the Raiders new HC). Anyway I thought the Vikings had an advantage since KAM knows Graham. But Graham was on the Patriots staff for a number of years so is probably familiar with McDaniels.J. One of the disadvantages of hiring a HC who’s in the Super Bowl. Graham would’ve been a good choice IMO.
I would if I were him.
The Vikings started out 4-2-1 but their tie came against a 6 win team and 3 of their wins came against teams that won 4 games or less. During that stretch the Vikings juggernaut of an offense put up 6 points against a 6 win Buffalo team that was the only above average defense they faced. The other defenses they faced were 16th, 19th, 20th, 22nd, 23rd and 26th in points given up per drive.J. Kapp 11 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 06, 2022 11:03 pmI would if I were him.
He wouldn’t have Dino the Dinosaur yelling at him to run it 40 times a game.
Let’s not forget, the Vikings were 4-2-1 at one point in 2018, and would’ve been 5-2 if Daniel Carlson had turned into Daniel Carlson a little sooner. The offense started out very well that year. It ended up being a mess, but a lot of that could be attributed to Zimmer hating every play DeFilippo called. Those two just did not see eye to eye.
For those of you who think DeFilippo is an idiot (or even if you don’t) watch this video. This is from 2017, when he was QBs coach for the Eagles. He’s breaking down red zone offense, and it’s brilliant. Seriously, watch it. I guarantee, you’ll learn something.
Wouldn’t another landing spot for JDF be Jacksonville with Doug Pederson? I don’t know who the OC was with the Eagles as JDF was the QB coach. But they do have a history together.J. They coached together in Cleveland. KOC was QB coach, and DeFilippo was OC.
Not saying it’s a done deal. But Flip needs a job, and KOC needs a coordinator. Both have worked with Cousins. Just sayin’.
Why would he be brought in to be an OC anywhere? It isn't like he nailed it with Chicago as the QB coach this year.40for60 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 07, 2022 9:18 amWouldn’t another landing spot for JDF be Jacksonville with Doug Pederson? He might be a smart guy, but my problem with him was straying away from what was working and his in-game decisions. By no means am I going to side with Mike Zimmer on most things, but yeah Flip's neglect of Dalvin Cook (who is one of the best, if not the best RB in the league) was extremely alarming. I mean look at his rushing attempts under Flip that year....J. Kapp 11 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 06, 2022 11:03 pmI would if I were him.

This is just people liking an OC because Zimmer didn't like him. His passing schemes were fine, but his overall strategy was awful, and no matter what you think of Zimmer, he was right to want to run more in 2018 and his OC should have listened to him. The fact he didn't listen to his HC to the detriment of the team should disqualify him from the conversations for OC alone.
Yeah, results matter.Pondering Her Percy wrote: ↑Mon Feb 07, 2022 11:57 amHe might be a smart guy, but my problem with him was straying away from what was working and his in-game decisions. I'm sorry but for Dalvin Cook, that is just not acceptable in any way, shape or form. I dont care what the game flow looked like, I dont care how successful or unsuccessful his runs were, I dont care how bad the OL was. This wasnt a 1-2 game thing. This was all year. He also had 0 TDs in those 8 games under Flip. Outside of two games, he didnt break 10 carries. TEN!! I know there are successful teams out there like the Bills and the Chiefs that barely run the ball, but we're not the Bills and Chiefs and we also have a 10 times better playmaking RB than either of those teams have that needs the ball in his hands.
Maybe it was more dic# measuring between him and Zimmer than anything but to be honest, I'm not a fan of this move.
Zimmer hated and held back every OC he ever had. Shurmur was his ace because he turned Case into a possible ring of honor QB. The champ game melt down ended that. DeFlip was the one he hated the most. That was mainly caused by shredding his No 1 D with nothing at QB in the champ game. Canning him was Zim's pay back. Norv Turner was another OC he couldn't stand. Basically chased him out of town. Turner had prior success with Dallas. But Turner also wanted to pass and get the 90s offense rolling. Zim wanted that early 70s style. Only throw when needed. Keep the attempts under 20. Run the clock out. Below was Zim's problem with DeFlipStumpHunter wrote: ↑Mon Feb 07, 2022 7:45 amThe Vikings started out 4-2-1 but their tie came against a 6 win team and 3 of their wins came against teams that won 4 games or less. Once they started facing real defenses like Buffalos, things got real bad real quick. The offense put up 13 in non-garbage time against the Saints + 7 to the Saints on a pick six. 17 points against the Lions. 14 non-garbage time points against the Bears + 7 to the Bears on a pick six. 10 points against the Patriots. 24 against the GB Packers. 0 non-garbate time points against Seattle and then he was fired after averaging 13 points when the game mattered over a 6 game span. All while refusing to use the 2nd best player on the offense more than 10 times a game.
DeFilippo was not held back by the HC, he was held back by his own stubbornness to want to win with the pass (Kirk's 606 pass attempts was tied for the most of his career) despite a suspect pass blocking line and a QB who was struggling mightily with turnovers. It was really stupid, he deserved to be fired, and if he is hired back here I will hope O'Connell and KAM are fired within 2 seasons. I don't care if his passing schemes are pretty good if he struggles with the fundamentals of an offense and refuses to listen to his HC even when his HC is 100% correct.
