Coordinators needed

Post by IIsweet »

I saw something and it made sense to me. Coming in as OC could be Liam Coen from Kentucky. He and O'Connell worked together with the Rams. I have no idea if they like each other or not, no idea if they can work together or not, but based on past experience, it might be a name we see again.
As far as DC ? I just do not know.

Definitely important, have no idea currently who it will be. Vic Fangio is the current rumor

Sounds like Vikings have parted ways with Kubiak (no surprise) and you have to assume Adam Zimmer is gone as well.

Same. Phillips is like the prime example to use of a great coordinator, terrible head coach.

Special teams coordinator went to the Chargers so that sucks, I hope that Vikings will try to keep McCardell wide receivers coach

Hard pass, time passed him by and I doubt he will come out of retirement to coach again

Maybe DC Patrick Graham from NYG. He was a finalist for the job, but add the title, Assistant Head Coach. The only negative I see, is that he just interviewed for a HC position. I would expect him to do so in a year. So he may be dynamic, but it may be a 1 and done type of deal. I want to see the energy and I believe that we will be using more analytics and science in our draft picks. I expect that the players will feel rejuvenated and find that pep in their step.
This whole thing is looking to be exactly the opposite of what we just endured. I am pumped right now.

With Kevin O'Connell going to Vikings, I keep hearing Mike Pettine as the likely DC there.

(La Canfora is often wrong, BTW)

Ugh.

The Packers’ defense was not good under Pettine, especially in the playoffs.

Any idea what defense he runs? 3-4 or 4-3? Do he play the soft zone Zimmer always ran?

He ran 3-4. Despite the fact that 3-4 is usually pretty stout against the run, Pettine’s Packer defense consistently faltered against good rushing teams, especially in big games. In 2020 when Dalvin went wild against them in Lambeau (163 rushing, 200+ total, 4 TDs) Rex Ryan, who worked with Pettine for more than a decade, and Ryan Clark both ripped Pettine to shreds in the media.

It’s hard to know who KOC will hire. He could go more traditional, or he could go the Brandon Staley route and find someone who goes against the typical “stop the run” grain to prioritize stopping the pass. I could see him viewing Pettine as that sort of guy. I hope not. We already failed spectacularly with one Packers castoff (Dom Capers). I’d rather not do it again.

We will see.

Pettine sucks, I hope someone else hires Pettine before Vikings do

One of the disadvantages of hiring a HC who’s in the Super Bowl. Graham would’ve been a good choice IMO.

True. I don’t know how this works, but don’t you think KOC has talked to assistants he is interested in and has let them know? But that’s not a sure thing, just as KOC could still back out- it’s happened before with Josh McDaniels (coincidentally the Raiders new HC). Anyway I thought the Vikings had an advantage since KAM knows Graham. But Graham was on the Patriots staff for a number of years so is probably familiar with McDaniels.
