Just my two cents but if the Vikings signed Ryan tannehill, let’s say last offseason and cousins didn’t exist, I’d have an AWFULLY hard time seeing any fan being ok with that. And I’m not sure how many “clutch plays”. Tannehill is making. He threw for under 100 yards in each of his first two playoff games. Henry is just so dominant that nobody can stop him. And the more I watched that titans team, the more I realized that I don’t think our run blocking is nearly as good as some think. I just think dalvin cook is that elusive. Derrick Henry is not elusive at all but has giant gaps that open for holes. We didn’t have that very often.
And as for the mobile QB argument. I mean, there are plenty of pocket passers in this league that are legitimate statues in the pocket and don’t extend plays. Brady, Brees, rivers, Ryan, Goff, Jimmy G, etc. But when you look at their successful years, did any of them have as bad of a pass blocking OL as cousins had this year? Not that I can remember. And they have all had huge contracts at one point or another.
And on a side note, Rodgers missed a wide open Allison on a 4 man rush and took a sack instead. Just saying.
PHP, I've made two long posts about Cousins and the subject of mobility, and they're solid takes. He's not a statue, but he has no escapability. Not talking about designed rollouts ... he's good on those, great to his left. I'm talking about escaping pressure on a straight dropback. It's not all his fault, but it's the truth. It's something the Vikings have to account for. Yes, the line gives up too much pressure, but Kirk doesn't pick them up when they do fail.
And no, I wouldn't take Tannehill over Cousins.
Pretty much exactly what I said in an earlier post. Cousins just doesnt seem to have that sense of being able to feel pressure and be able to step out of it or slide and escape. He really just doesn't do it. He just seems to fold when the pocket breaks down and panicked. He doesn't have that ice water in the veins they talk about. It is just the sad truth of it.
And yes it isn't always his fault because we really don't have a good line. But I've just seen him, way too many times, to not be able to escape it and make a play. Like I said he either throws a bad ball to a checkdown or he just folds and takes a sack.
After watching Mahomes today it made it even more painful to admit.
I just wanna die as a Super Bowl Champion Viking Fan!!

Well on the bright side, we looked better against SF than the Packers have so far. They can’t stop their run either. It appears we ran into a buzz saw last week.
I think our offseason focus should be improving the OL and getting younger on defense. I’m not ready to blow the whole thing up yet.
You beat me to it. Man, the Niners are OBLITERATING the Pukers. At least we put up 10.
Garrapollo hands off the ball off better than anyone I’ve ever seen

Mahomes did look good today. The entire team looked good. They get the 49ers next. Bosa looks pretty dam good also. Matter of fact that entire D looked good. You act like this will be an easy time for him. They all crumble under pressure. Even Rodgers didn't look like himself.

I agree I never said he did have escapability. He never has. But neither has Brady, Brees, Ryan, Goff, Rivers, Jimmy G, etc. They are all pure pocket passers. Pure pocket passers rarely move outside of the pocket. But these passers have had very good pass blocking OLs in their successful years. We had a very bad one. That's my point. Asking Cousins to escape from the pocket is like asking Brees (or any of those guys above) to escape. It's not happening. That's not who they are. If anyone expected Cousins to be the Rodgers/Mahomes type that escape the pocket to create plays, I could've told you day 1 that wasnt going to happen.
And yeah as for Tannehill, I agree. Guys want a cheap QB with this offense now and I'm not sure who they think we can land that would get us over the hump.

No less the fact that Keenum had a much easier road especially given that our division that year was an absolute joke. But the two seasons were so drastically different it’s not even funny,
Our division was a joke this year too. The Packers were HUGE posers.
Dude what? They just went to the NFC championship. I thought the same initially but they were clearly good enough to get there. Keenum's year they had Brett Hundley most of the year and went 7-9. 4 of those 7 wins coming from Rodgers. The Bears were horrendous at 5-11. And the fricken Lions finished 2nd at 9-7. That is in no way shape or form comparable to this year.
We were the only competitive team in the division that year. This year the Vikings, Packers and Bears were all competitive.
Keenums games in the division were a much easier walk in the park compared to what Cousins had to deal with this year and it's not even close.

After watching Mahomes today there is no doubt he is the best in the NFL right now,he makes good decisions, moves very well and sees the whole field.
I am not convinced Mahomes is the best in the NFL until he proves he can torch the 49ers defense in the Superbowl

Brady is NOT a statue. Just because they aren't scrambling QB's doesn't mean they don't avoid pressure. All you have to do is take a side step or something, or move up a little. Cousins on the other hand is a true statue that rarely does that.
Yeah I'd love for Cousins to move up, right into the DL that Elflein and Bradbury whiff on play after play. Look at Brady this year, his OL struggled and so did he in the pocket. If you can find ways to pressure Brady he crumbles. Look at the losses they had and how much he was taking heat. Look at Brees vs. the Vikings. When you can get pressure on a pure pocket passing QB, they struggle. Hence why these teams build good OLs around them.
The Vikings OL was ranked 27th in pass blocking by PFF. Let me know how Brady and Brees do with the 27th ranked pass blocking OL. We'll see how much they'll be "stepping up or moving to the side".
Tom Brady and the Patriots have looked vulnerable toward the tail end of the season, and that’s been especially true when defenses pressure Brady.
Bottom line is, we have a pass blocking OL that someone like Russell Wilson could survive behind, because his is even worse but not someone like Cousins, Brees, Brady, any pure pocket passer.
So we need to either find a way to better this OL by a good margin or draft a mobile QB. But the current combination we have doesnt cut it. We have a bad pass blocking OL paired with a pure pocket passer. It's like mixing oil and water. This is why I said all year the main reason they had Cousins rolling out. Because we didnt have the damn OL to hold up when he's taking 7 step drops from under center. I called it out often in the first Chicago game.

Just curious but what “great players” can we not afford on this team?
Well Jimmy G who I'm not impressed with at all takes a ton of CAP space not a rookie deal and I think he's about to take his team to a Super Bowl. Having a dominate defense helps also. I'm not talking our 2017 D who many think was dominate but a D like the 49ers put together this year. Ask Rodgers about there D. They made him crumble also. He even fumbled. Threw a pick also. That's playing D. It's not over yet because there is still time left. More TOs may come.
GB's offense was not good this season, not like they have been in the past anyway. Still, if their D had held SF to even 27 like ours did, that game might have been different.
If SF shuts KC down I will be impressed, but while stopping our offense and GB's wasnt easy, SF wasnt the first to do it. No great feat there for SF.

If the Seahawks can shut down the Broncos in the Superbowl then the 49ers can
Ive been to Arrowhead a couple of times including this year’s game. Never had any issues other than very minor ribbing. I’d say one of the better fan bases for sure.
Really? I guess you got lucky, the fans there have been classless and one of them pour beer on me
Wow, sorry to hear that. I’ve literally walked around the entire parking lot hitting multiple random tailgates with no issues. Although the viking presence was strong this year.

It’s very much an oil and water situation, which is why I think extending Cousins would be a mistake. This offense as long as Zimmer is here is always going to be run first and conservative. Cousins simply takes up too much resources to shore up the line and isn’t elite enough to make it work with the line we have. They gave it a shot and they can try one more time next year but really I think it’s better to cut losses at this point. Either make it work next year or pivot to a new direction.

What do you mean by make it work. If it's Super Bowl then only two teams made it work. We made the playoffs and knocked off a division winner on the road. That's a good season. IMO our D needs the most help. They did a great job against Brees. Wilson got beat in the playoffs as well. He won't take that current team to the Super Bowl. They need a better D. They beat Philly but is that a great thing. Our ground game didn't do much as the season wore on. We had 20 yards rushing against the 48ers. That was a beat down to the max. Somethings wrong there to. Is it OL or RB. They need to cut the stiffs that take up a ton of CAP. The draft won't provide immediate help either. What OL players will be there in FA. That.s the biggest question.
