I think Shaw could survive as a backup QB in the NFL for maybe 4-6 years, something like that.
A successful coach needs a patient wife, loyal dog, and great quarterback - and not necessarily in that order.

Please football gods, please allow Bridgewater to be there at 8. Teddy is the truth!

Re: Which QB would you want the most in the draft?
I am not going to pick a particular QB because I don't know a lot about all of them, I know the most about SEC quarterbacks because I watch a lot of SEC football but what I'll do is describe the traits I think we need in a QB based on our personnel and Norv Turner's typical vertical passing attack. One thing that I think that can't be undervalued is a quarterbacks ability to take snaps under center. As long as we have AP he is going to be the focal point of the offense and a QB will have to be comfortable under center. I also think play action is going to be a big part of our offense so they have to be able to read defenses pre snap because a good play action quarterback will take their eyes of the defense for a second in order to execute a realistic play fake. I also think they will need a strong arm because I think the vertical passing game will be a bigger part of our offense. Finally, I think they have to be willing to step up in the pocket as opposed to getting the happy feet and running every time they feel pressure. As long as a QB can do those things I think they have a chance at being successful.

They are picking high in the 2nd too, so I think JG would be there in the 2nd. Can't risk another Ponder reach. If Brisgewater or Manziel don't slip they should just get Zimmer a DB or LB in the 1st. No Bortles please!majorm wrote:I find it funny that so many here are jumping on the Garoppolo bandwagon. If he truly is impressive in all the off-season workouts and especially the combine, I'm going to bet the Vikings are not the only team that will notice. It's like everybody thinks since he's not Bridgewater or Football, he's some top secret that only the Vikings will know about. Sorry, if he's truly looking like a legitimate QB, and the Vikings target him as their guy, they may well have to pull the trigger in the first round or somebody else will snatch him up before they get another shot.
I liken it to all the "genius" trade ideas fans come up with on the call-in shows.
Caller: "I have a great idea. The Vikings need to trade (insert nobody special or late round draft pick) to (insert team) for (insert All-Pro player at position the Vikings need.)"
The other 31 teams do have people in the front office that also watch football.

I promise you, I won't shed a single tear. I don't have a favorite QB in this draft and if the Vikes don't draft a QB with the 8th pick, they'll have an opportunity to improve their team by drafting a quality player at another position instead. If there's a QB they absolutely feel they must have, they may be able to trade up and get him.Jeffbleedspurple wrote:For those of you that criticized us fans that claimed the Vikings would have been better off losing an extra game or 2 last season, I still say we will see you all![]()
when your favorite QB is off the board come #8, then we will probably get stuck with Carr and then you all really will be
Throwing games for draft position is bad business and it was never a realistic option last year anyway. Rooting for the team to lose is a personal choice. I don't do it but I understand why some fans wanted it to happen.

Re: Which QB would you want the most in the draft?
Good post. You point out some things that are easy to overlook. Manziel, for example, worked out of the shotgun a lot. Other SEC guys also used the shotgun frequently as far as I can tell: like Murray (great long ball). Mettenberger looked pretty solid, but not exceptional, to me in the two or so games I watched of LSU. MacCaron has always been steady in my eyes too. I think he may be a bit underrated. He gets discredited for being surrounded by superior talent, but he fulfilled his role pretty darn well consistently in his college career. How about Garroppolo and Bortles? Carr, for example, I believe worked almost exclusively out of the shotgun.MrPurplenGold wrote:I am not going to pick a particular QB because I don't know a lot about all of them, I know the most about SEC quarterbacks because I watch a lot of SEC football but what I'll do is describe the traits I think we need in a QB based on our personnel and Norv Turner's typical vertical passing attack. Derek Carr is the perfect fit for Minnesota. All he needs to do is handoff to AD, throw bubble screens and go deep with play action. It will also be a huge plus to have one of the strongest arms playing outdoors in the cold.

I'm a Fresno St. alum that happens to live in St.Paul. I just want to see Carr land here. I've been a long time lurker and just haven't had the need to post until now. Call me a homer if you want but I just feel the kid will be special in the NFL.fiestavike wrote: Two posts? Is the other post also about Derek Carr? Is your name David?

I wouldn't be mad if we got Carr. He's needs some work but it's hard not to love his deep ball throws.
Re: Which QB would you want the most in the draft?
I'm starting to warm to Mettenberger a bit, but still have some concerns there. What are your guys thoughts on Keith Price as a deep sleeper?

Re: Which QB would you want the most in the draft?
Derek Carr likely = David Carr, bypass...
I voted JFB, as the dude is a straight-up baller. In two seasons, he piled up more yards (7820) and td's (63) than Favre did in four at So. Miss (7695, 52). He seems to me to share some of Favre's non season-killing qualities, such as his passion for the game and sandlot style of play. Besides, I kinda miss having a cocky punk under center!
If Russell Wilson can succeed at a smaller size...to paraphrase his signature question: Why not Johnny? Of course, qb's named Johnny have a 3-3 SB record, so it could be a tossup in that respect.
If not him, then AJ McCarron in the 2nd or 3rd would be ok with me too.
Oh, here's the stats, plus other info...click the pix to go to the original pages:
Favre

Manziel

Manziel would definitely make me leap for joy, assuming Bridgewater is off the board by then.

Remember a few years ago, up until this year even, when certain posters kept putting stats up comparing Ponder to all the greats, and how they did in college and how poorly they started out in the NFL? That's what JFB would bring us. But Wade Phillips told Houston to pick him first so we wont have to worry about it.Spiderbeavis wrote:Derek Carr likely = David Carr, bypass...

Hey, just you wait until ol' Norv coaches Ponder up!PurpleKoolaid wrote:Remember a few years ago, up until this year even, when certain posters kept putting stats up comparing Ponder to all the greats, and how they did in college and how poorly they started out in the NFL? But yeah, I know what you're saying...it's just all us fans trying to make sense of something that, in the end, is a complete and total crapshoot.

Re: Which QB would you want the most in the draft?
I can't deny it, the more I watch highlights of all the top qb's in the draft.....I'm beginning to be more and more impressed with Carr! His arm an mechanics remind me a lot of Stafford. I'm beginning to believe he has one of the most accurate and if not THE STRONGEST arm In the draft. I think he fits Norvs system, now don't be mistaken if Teddy or Manziel are there it's not a question we pull the trigger. But if somehow we go best cb, LB, de in the 1st and , if we have to move back into the 1st to get Carr (only team I'm weary if is Arizona) .....I would be pleased. What are your thoughts....an take a minute to really study the kid in this vid....makes u go hmmmm
