Stellar Album Alert: Skeletal Lamping

Post by Colinito »

So once upon a time we had a conversation about music on here. Though in my defense of modern music I may have made some statements that, upon reflection, I don't agree with, I certainly think there are a lot of stellar bands and musicians out there consistently putting out good albums and totally flying under the mainstream radar.

One such album came out 14 days ago and has been on repeat ever since. It's amazing. The title is "Skeletal Lamping" by of Montreal.

In an interview with Wireless Bollinger in 2007, Kevin Barnes described his concept for the follow-up to Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? as an album composed of hundreds of consecutive short segments ranging from thirty to fifty seconds in length, with the intention that it "feel like one long piece with hundreds of movements."
This is exactly what the album is like. It is like ADD paradise; songs going in and coming out at an amazing pace. And the success rate of these little ditties are very high. Fun, sexy, funky songs with the of Montreal twist. It's almost like a Prince album, or Shuggie Otis or something. But really danceable and humorous at the same time.

Here's the video to their first single off the album:

Anyway, I realize the average football fan probably will think these guys are pretty weird, but for the distinguished music fan who is looking for things that are new and fresh, definitely check out this album.

That sounds is pretty cool. It reminded me of

Daft Punk (Musically);

Brendon Benson (vocally);

I liked it, I'll have to look into getting the album. Any other songs you know of by them on youtube?

Thanks Cliff for actually responding. And since you're going to beat me in fantasy tonight, I may as well give you kudos on that as well. I talked ish beforehand, but it was all in fun.

NEWAYZ...

I agree with your comparisons. They actually remind me of a lot of different groups, mostly from the 60s and 70s. This album is much funkier than prior ones, however, and the Daft Punk reference really fits it (musically).

As for videos on youtube:

They have great official music videos. I already linked to their newest one. I also like the videos for "Requiem for OMM," "Gronlandic Edit," "Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games," and "Heimsdalgate Like a Promethean Curse."

Also, they have some fan-shot concert videos of them covering Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" and some great acoustic versions of songs, including "Lysergic Bliss." No professional quality concert vids, however. :(

As for songs from the newest album (if you're an iTunes guy):
Wicked Wisdom
Plastis Wafers
St. Exquisite's Confessions
Our Eluardian Instance

I must offer a warning that the first song on the album starts out good but then gets really annoying. I usually skip past track 1 after a couple minutes and from Track 2 on it is magic!
