I agree, it is purely 20/20 hindsight. There was no way to imagine that Culpepper was anything less than an all pro QB for years to come. The fan base would have been stunned and outraged (as if that matters) to take a first round pick, Rodgers, to insure the position of QB. As we all know from history DC was injured and was never the same. This is like saying we should have drafted Trent Richardson even though AP was young and the best running back in the game. How would have that worked out??VikingPaul73 wrote: I see your point, but this is just 1 example with the benefit of hindsight. I'm sure you could go back and find examples of teams that had a franchise QB already on the roster, and passed on a top QB prospect in the first round.....and 5 years later the franchise QB was still going strong...meaning that the prospect would have warmed the bench for 5 years and been a wasted 1st round pick. That is probably a more common scenario than the Culpepper freak and horrible injury.
Where does the BPA approach end? If you have 1 AD on the roster do you draft a RB? What if you have 2 ADs? 3ADs? As Denny Green always said, you have to balance BPA with need.

Re: Vikings QB of the future search list
A scenario where we took Aaron Rodgers would have been a little bit different than having Culpepper coming off a great season, and picking a just any old QB in the first round, simply because Rodgers was the consensus number 1 pick in the draft, the guy falling to where he did was simply ridiculous.
Im not saying I thought we should have taken him at the time, or anything, but if there was ever a time to take a 1st round player at a position we thought we had filled, it was then.

Sure, and if the Vikings had known he was going to be good as good as he's been, they probably would have taken him. On the other hand, if he'd been drafted by the Vikings and played under Childress with Williamson, Taylor, Robinson, Wiggins, etc. as his receivers maybe he wouldn't have become the same QB he is now.Im not saying I thought we should have taken him at the time, or anything, but if there was ever a time to take a 1st round player at a position we thought we had filled, it was then.
Rodgers is just an example anyway. In hindsight, it's easy to say the Vikings should have stayed true to a rigid "best player available" philosophy and drafted him but that's why hindsight is 20/20.
Re: Vikings QB of the future search list
Aaron Rodgers getting along with Childress? Oh yeah, that would have been something to watch.Mothman wrote: Sure, and if the Vikings had known he was going to be good as good as he's been, they probably would have taken him. Are you sure you aren't really just Rick Spielman hiding behind the forum pseudonym SlickRick?!Slick Rick wrote:
This.
I think the Vikings saw a lot that they liked in Christian Ponder, and that's really all you can do. Even with his statistical shortcomings to date, it's hard not to see some of the good things that they must have saw, and led them to pick him at #12. He has a very quick release, great footwork, athleticism, basically everything that you'd like to see in a QB. I think the one thing that has really held him back is his nerves. He always seems to be on the run before he's making his read, whereas someone like Russell Wilson quickly makes a read and reacts to avoid the pressure and try to make a play.
Who knows, Ponder could make the leap, and we might all eat our words. He's in a new offensive scheme, he should have some new weapons, and his defense probably isn't going to give up 32 points per game.

I tease, I tease, but everyone time I see your username I cannot help but think you may actually be Rick Spielman.

In the draft where the Vikes passed on Rodgers, how did it work out with the guys they took?Purple bruise wrote: I agree, it is purely 20/20 hindsight. Not well. I don't think anyone's suggesting the Vikings drafted well that year, they're just saying taking Rodgers was an extremely unlikely scenario at the time, and justifiably so.

Exactly to the point. It is very moot now but easy to regurgitate with 20/20 hindsight. Geez I wish they would have drafted Brady or Wilson, or Kaepernick, they would seem like geniuses.saint33 wrote:

20/20 hindsight. Blah blah blah. Say it again. It's so incredibly insightful.Purple bruise wrote:20/20 hindsight
Who knew Troy Williamson wasn't going to be a future Hall of Fame candidate? It would really have taken some of that 20/20 hindsight to sniff that one out.

You know dude I have had it with your comments towards me. My 20/20 hindsight comments are directed to those who most often say we should have done this, we should have done that after the fact and that is to me 20/20 hindsight. If you don't like tough ##### , put me on your foe list and go on with your bad self griping and complaining about everything Viking related.Eli wrote: 20/20 hindsight. Blah blah blah. Say it again. I think it's rather clear you two are best off both using the foe option.
