Hunter has been my favorite Viking for a long time but I wouldn't pay him what he wants. Where the Vikings messed up here is that they could have traded him mid season after Kirk went down to a team like the Jags for probably a 1st round pick. Instead now they'll just get a compensatory 3rd.

Re: 2024 Free Agents
The Vikings just signed Nick Muse. We are probably not drafting a TE now.
EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings on Tuesday announced the re-signing of tight end Nick Muse, who was set to become an exclusive rights free agent next week.
Muse originally joined the Vikings as a seventh-round pick (227th overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft.
He has appeared in 12 games for Minnesota, including 10 in his rookie season when he logged 108 special teams snaps.

Re: 2024 Free Agents
I just don't see that happening either. Hunter is very likely entering the terminal phase of his career and KAM should know that. Any team that inks him to a megadeal is wagering that he will defy what decades of data says happens to a DE's performance when he reaches Hunter's age and number of years as a starter.Maelstrom88 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 03, 2024 1:07 pm https://www.si.com/fannation/bringmethe ... 20-million

Besides, this is a DEEP DE class. Assuming the Vikings hold at 11 and there is the expected QB feeding frenzy ahead of them, they will likely have their pick among a group of DE prospects who could all come in and have a Micah Parsons-like impact in their rookie year.
I also don't think the basic approach the Vikings have been taking with inking aging vets to big deals has worked out that well for them. I mean, they paid guys like Cousins, Smith, Cook, and probably a few others a lot of money for what result? They've basically been treading water for what seems like forever now with a team that is basically competitive for a first round playoff game. Part of that treadmill cycle is caused by the fact they've also drafted very poorly on net, which in turn creates a sense of desperation that in order to remain "competitive", they can't afford to lose any of their "big name" players.
Meanwhile, other teams not stringing themselves up by their heels are dumping certain overpriced players before they demand extensions or play hardball on contract negotiations similar to what you suggested the Vikings could have done with Hunter last year when it was obvious the season was over, and using the value they get in return to improve their fortunes in the draft, restock their depth, and give themselves a fighting chance to actually compete for something significant.
From where I sit, it is far more risky for KAM to ink Hunter to a megadeal and keep him in Purple than let him leave in free agency and get that compensatory pick in return. The Vikings already don't have a 3rd rounder this year due to the trade for Hockenson, so at least they'd get something semi valuable in return for Hunter. If KAM inks Hunter to the extension he wants, KAM had better pray that Hunter is the DE who defies what the data says will happen, because otherwise, KAM will have just sunk the team deeper in the quicksand of mediocrity.

I don't buy into that data at all because none of that data is based on Danielle Hunter. Not all DE/Pass rushers are built the same.VikingLord wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 12:21 pmI just don't see that happening either. Valid point and one that KAM would be placing a significant bet on should he commit those resources to Hunter.VikingsVictorious wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 12:26 pmI don't buy into that data at all because none of that data is based on Danielle Hunter. Re: 2024 Free Agents
I'm very much in the camp of bringing Hunter back. He should cost somewhere between 20-25 million a year.VikingLord wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 12:34 pmValid point and one that KAM would be placing a significant bet on should he commit those resources to Hunter.VikingsVictorious wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 12:26 pm

I wonder what they are smoking -
On Thursday, March 8, the BetOnline Sportsbook listed Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields at 3-to-1 to open the year under center in Minnesota, per Alex Shapiro of NBC Sports Chicago. Next on the list was Trey Lance, currently of the Dallas Cowboys at 4-to-1.

They also need to pay Woonan or say bye bye. All the negatives pointed out about Hunter will be considered by any team that wants to sign him. I don't even know how many teams will be in the market. The teams with a ton of cap space more than likely are just playing the string out. The team that could use him are the Eagles. Their pass rush blows now for some reason so they can't compete. Even a highly paid QB can't save them. O'Neil is the guy that needs to take a significant pay cut or he needs to be dealt for whatever they can get. Giving up 6 sacks blows. You can find a practice squad guy and get that. I think they should sign Hunter. But any team that would give Davenport a ton to prove if he can play isn't the smartest team in the world.VikingLord wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 12:34 pmValid point and one that KAM would be placing a significant bet on should he commit those resources to Hunter.VikingsVictorious wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 12:26 pm

Re: 2024 Free Agents
Michael Onwenu T/G 6'3" 340. This could be a nice signing for G. 2nd team all pro at G in 2022. That's not bad at all.
Onwenu, 26, was a sixth-round pick by the Patriots out of Michigan in the 2020 NFL Draft. He was a natural right guard at Michigan. But when he got to the NFL, he played tackle for his first two seasons. He switched back to guard in 2022 and was a Second-Team All-Pro. He began last season as the Patriots' right guard, but moved to right tackle when the line fell apart.

Re: 2024 Free Agents
Mayfield just got 3/100. Does that set the FA QB market? Will the Falcons give Kirk 2/90?
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.
Re: 2024 Free Agents
Probably depends on the view of Mayfield. IMO he's a journeyman who had a decent season last year. Others might feel he's a franchise QB. The Falcons need to do something because they have nothing at QB and are wasting a team with good overall talent. If they feel Cousins gives them a shot over the next 2 season then they will throw the money at him. If not then it's the draft and hope approach. Good luck finding the 1 who might be a good starter.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/kirk ... er-report/Kirk Cousins informed the Minnesota Vikings he plans to test free agency as he and his agent remain in communication with them, according to NFL Media. Cousins will become a free agent when the new league year begins on Wednesday, though can reach an agreement with any team beginning Monday.

Re: 2024 Free Agents
The Vikings’ quarterback situation is unclear with Kirk Cousins officially hitting the open market on Monday afternoon.
But Minnesota has made a move to improve its defense.
According to a report from NFL Media, the Vikings have agreed to sign edge rusher Jonathan Greenard.
As an initial report on Greenard’s numbers, ESPN’s Adam Schefter notes the deal is for four years and worth $76 million with $42 million guaranteed.
Greenard, 26, was a third-round pick in the 2020 draft and just completed his rookie deal. He put together his best season in 2023, recording 12.5 sacks with 15 tackles for loss and 22 quarterback hits. He also had a pair of passes defensed and a forced fumble.
In 48 games with 32 starts, Greenard has 23.0 sacks, 32 TFLs, 41 QB hits, and eight passes defensed.
Greenard was No. 34 on PFT’s list of top 100 free agents.
19 Million a year for this guy??? I'd have rather kept Hunter for 23 or even a little more.

Looks like another Marcus Davenport to me. What were the Vikings thinking signing this guy.
