Donatell has a background in a base 3-4 defense, as has most of the defensive coordinators the Vikings interviewed.
So do you guys think they will run a 3-4 base defense next year? Most of the players on the team now aren’t well suited for a 3-4 (eg. Kendrick’s) . So if they go that direction, does that mean a major overhaul of the D?
Thoughts?
I think they have a major defensive overhaul regardless of the scheme they're going to run.
I mean, look at all the levels of the defense and the decisions they have to make at each one given their cap constraints and I'm not entirely sure what their real options are. Do they keep Hunter at his cap and with his injury history? The interior of the Vikings DL sucked last year. Do they stick with Tomlinson and Pierce? If not, how do they address that glaring weakness? Barr is as a good as gone, and I'm not sure if Kendricks is going to be as effective either. He seems like he might be in the decline phase of his career. In the secondary they have a way overpaid free safety in Smith who is also in the decline phase of his career and no settled starting CBs. They'll likely have to do another patch up job in FA with most of their DBs.
They're heading in this next season under severe cap pressure and little room to maneuver. They might get some help from development of some of their younger players over the offseason, but KAM and Donatell are going to have their work cut out for them.
If the Vikings ever needed to have a killer draft on the defensive side of the ball, 2022 is the year to have it.

I’m a big believer in hiring based on merit, too. Unfortunately, the world doesn’t necessarily work that way. I’ve seen it — and been on the short end of it — far too many times. It appears you have, too.
Let’s hope KAM believes in a meritocracy.
Generally, I don't think meritocracy is really possible. It's a necessary mythology when you get to 'communities' that exist in massive scale, but everyone knows its not really how its going to work. Sports is about the close as it gets, but even there you'll have nepotism and all kinds of bias and familiarity playing into things. I have no problem with that. Meritocracy is a fraud, and the real problem of injustice is inherent to operating things at the massive scale we've come to view as normal in modernity. We can try a million ways to resolve that 'problem', but the problem is that the mythology of merit is false, and we won't solve that until we subscribe to a true mythology.
You haven’t convinced me. And don’t bother trying because you won’t.

The Vikings have added 5 coaches to Kevin O'Connell's staff:
• Matt Daniels, Special Teams Coordinator
• Daronte Jones, Defensive Backs
• Ben Kotwica, Assistant Special Teams
• Wes Phillips, Offensive Coordinator
• Mike Smith, Outside Linebackers/Pass Rush Specialist

Hiring Daronte back is a bad move but the rest of the hires are good moves
Donatel is a home run hire imo. I didn't know Wes was Wade's son. He seemed to know what he was talking about. I feel good about this staff. I'm much more optimistic than with Zimmer.
