Love the pick. Really liking this draft so farSamia (6’5/305) made 48 starts on the Sooners’ offensive line, manning right tackle as a freshman and sophomore, right guard as a junior and senior, and sharing Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year with two others last season. Samia allowed zero sacks and just 11 QB hurries on 879 snaps in 2018.

This is a good pick although I doubt he sees much playing time this season. He was very good at OU (I'm a huge Sooner fan) and I'm glad he's here.

Great experience, initial quickness, and smarts. Will earn a starting position for us at some point imo.

The guys he has to compete with are replacement level. I know the team is pretty conservative and have given cash to scrubs like Klein, but hopefully he can surprise in camp.PurpleMustReign wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2019 12:27 pm This is a good pick although I doubt he sees much playing time this season. True, but I meant more that Zimmer, etc. Seem extremely reluctant to play rookie linemen right away. It practically took an act of God to have him even play O'neill let alone let him start.dead_poet wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2019 1:25 pmThe guys he has to compete with are replacement level. I really love this pick. He is a big, road grader type of offensive lineman and he has played in big time games. I don't know why he couldn't come in right away and start. It is not like we have a ton of talent and experience in front of him. I just do not understand Spielman and all of the trading down, trading down back in the 6th and 7th rounds. The talent is in the upper rounds not the lower rounds.

There's something about cap implications. Something about not counting against the cap if not in the top-X at their position. And I read something about having more lottery tickets in later rounds improves your chances at hitting on a pick after the third round. Something like a 6% hit rate in the fifth (for example) and if you have 4-5 sixth rounders your chances go from 4-5% to 10-20% or something.Purplepain2018 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2019 2:11 pm I really love this pick. Exactly that’s what I keep trying to explain but some don’t seem to get it. If you just trade up and lose all your later round picks you’re going to end up with about 4-5 picks in the entire draft. The more players you draft, the more chance you find guys that make an impact. I feel like that’s just common sensedead_poet wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2019 2:16 pmThere's something about cap implications. Re: 4th round pick- Dru Samia- OG Oklahoma
Spielman used one of those later picks to come up and get Samia. That’s why they are nice to have. When you have a surplus of them, you can trade up, not lose much and still have picks for depth later on. In the 3rd we were trading one pick every time and got 2 or more picks in return each time. And still picked in the 3rdPurplepain2018 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2019 2:11 pm I really love this pick. He is a big, road grader type of offensive lineman and he has played in big time games. I would rather just marry Giselle instead of messing around with a bunch of Rosie O Donells hoping to find a good one. Screw the trading back 4or 5 times. Once or twice is ok 5 times is crazy.Pondering Her Percy wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2019 2:25 pmExactly that’s what I keep trying to explain but some don’t seem to get it. We are by far not the only team that has traded back multiple times. Like someone recently said, for every team moving up, someone is moving down. It’s happens every yearBigwehrm wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2019 2:41 pmI would rather just marry Giselle instead of messing around with a bunch of Rosie O Donells hoping to find a good one. Re: 4th round pick- Dru Samia- OG Oklahoma
we all get the Math, but thanks for the insulting comment. But you are completely over-simplifying it. If we had an unlimited roster and we could keep 250 guys if we wanted, and evaluate them over years to see how they develop (or a minor league system like MLB or something), then your math would make more sense. But we don't. It's a 53 man roster so just a couple deep at most positions. And the coaches have just weeks to evaluate in Camp and make decisions. what do you guys think that after evaluating guys in games/tape/interviews/etc for years, suddenly in camp the Coaches just get to role dice to see which will have a successful career, so the more roles the better? Oversimplification. I get that it helps to get a guy in camp to see how he looks up close in your system, but the coaches still have to quickly make decisions and cut down to 53. It's like Rick just wants to kick the can and push the tough decisions onto the coaching staff.dead_poet wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2019 2:16 pmThere's something about cap implications. Like I said in another thread, to me it seems like Rick just doesn't have trust in his own evaluation process, so he just collects as much as possible and hopes someone sticks and pushes the decisions onto the coaching staff. Trust your process and your board and bring in the guy you like best!!!

Re: 4th round pick- Dru Samia- OG Oklahoma
even your math is oversimplified. Of course 3 6th rounders is better than 1 6th rounder, all else being equal. But that isn't the question
If you want to make a fair comparison, pull the impact player % for a mid 3rd and mid 4th (IMPACT player, not some dude like Letroy Guion who clings to a roster spot few a few years and then is considered a success because he lasted longer than the average 7th) vs. whatever we ended up with for the trades, and that would be an interesting stat. Still an oversimplification because there is a 53 man roster and you still have to rely on staff to find the diamond in the rough in training camp, but at least it would be more of an apples to apples comparison

"Road grader" is not the book on Samia.Purplepain2018 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2019 2:11 pm I really love this pick. He is a big, road grader type of offensive lineman and he has played in big time games. He's more of a move guard than a base blocker, according to scouting reports. Agility and lateral movement are positive attributes, while core strength is an issue right now. That's why he likely won't start right away.
However, it's clear the Vikings are looking for a certain type of linemen. Kubiak isn't looking for road graders. He's looking for agile, athletic guys who have good feet and can work in a zone blocking scheme. That's why they took the guys they did. Both Bradbury and Samia fit that description. The difference is that Bradbury has tremendous core strength. O'Neill at tackle will be a fit, as will Elflein, whether it's at guard or center. Reiff played for O-line coaching savant Kirk Ferentz at Iowa, which uses exclusively zone blocking.
That's why the Josh Kline signing baffles me a bit. He doesn't seem all that athletic. Maybe they know something we don't.

Go ahead. I dare you.
Underestimate this man.
