I already get the feeling the Vikes will either be signing a free agent safety or drafting a safety next year.
I suspect you're right. The good news is the next draft seems to be deep at safety. Some college names to watch: Jalen Ramsey, Nate Andrews, Karl Joseph, Jalen Mills, Vonn Bell

It also looks like there are some decent guys available in free agency either as veterans or young guys coming off their rookie contracts.

Free agents of note: Eric Weddle, Eric Berry, Reggie Nelson (Bengal with obvious ties to Zimmer but will be 32), Mark Barron, Tashaun Gipson, George Iloka (Bengals)

Gipson and Iloka are my preferences out of the bunch but they each may command $5-7 million/year and I'm not sure how our cap will look with Harrison Smith also needing an extension.

Red alert.
@mattvensel Anthony Barr on the 49ers run game: "Honestly, they ran maybe two or three plays over and over again and we just couldn’t stop it." #Vikings

@christomasson Tackle Mike Harris said this is the #Vikings offensive line motto for the week: “We’re determined to keep Teddy clean.’’
I know what he means but I can't help but picture Harris dressed as a butler following Teddy around all week with tiny broom and a lint roller.

@christomasson Mike Zimmer says he's undecided on whether Andrew Sendejo or Robert Blanton will start at strong safety for #Vikings on Sunday vs. Detroit.

At this point throw another linebacker out there instead. Or maybe a fifth defensive lineman. Man they are pathetic. Want to point fingers? Point one at the guy that put this talent together. :steamed:

Oh FFS.

Put Blanton back in. Sendejo has ZERO business playing in the starting unit.

I agree, and im not a Blanton fan. Kind of embarrassing Sendejo hasnt been replaced yet. Exum must be really bad.

From the sounds of it it's more mental than it is physical. Zimmer said that Exum doesn't seem to know where to be/have as good of a grasp of the defense/trusted not to freelance enough to be in the conversation yet. However it may be only a matter of time if Blanton/Sendejo continue to struggle. I'm getting tired of this position being unsettled. It needs to be addressed once and for all next season.

I try not to think about that because there's zero chance that happens and Seattle has made it clear they aren't interested in a trade. And there's reports that the Seahawks and Chancellor are only $900,000 apart, which is chump change in NFL dollars. Seattle's in a tough spot here. They can't make a precedent to rip up someone's contract with three years left but Chancellor could be an exception there if he's really not demanding the farm and he is such a well-respected leader and stud player. But if they were open to a trade they'd want the farm and as much as I'd drool at a Smith/Chancellor duo at the back end, I'm not sure I'd want to mortgage a ton of draft picks to do it. The only thing that I keep thinking about is that Rick did pull the trigger on two first-rounders for Jared Allen. Is Chancellor that type of player? I don't think you trade away a first-rounder plus additional compensation for a 27 year-old safety that's going to cost you more than his already $7 million average, especially when you're going to pay Smith around that. Sadly, this isn't going to happen. But it'd be sweet if it did.

@Andrew_Krammer All accounted for during open portion of #Vikings practice again. Sendejo working w/ base defense in punt return, could mean he starts again

@Andrew_Krammer #Vikings have waived rookie T Tyrus Thompson, a sixth-round pick, off injured reserve.

Good presser with Zimmer today: http://www.vikings.com/media-vault/vide ... 2512351599

Acknowledges the pass rush could've been better despite hitting the QB a bunch. Thought the linebackers played better and the offensive line did well (YMMV on that one I suppose). Also brings up the Lions 4th down issue.
