Newman was solid under Zimmer. It's a plus that he already knows this defense. However, I highly doubt they are going to rely on a 37 year old to just take over

What I take away is he's finishing blocks and plays, he's got some speed on him for a mountain and he's always looking for someone to smash. I'm going to be rooting hard for this guy in camp. If he can do even half of what he did overseas he could be a contributor. I'll be anxious to see how he does against Everson and some other fast/agile pass rushers.
He is a monstrous athlete that is for sure. I will be curious to see what he can do.

One thing that jumps out from his tape immediately is his lack of fundamentals. He plays way too high. I know it is very difficult for someone who is 6'9" to play 'low' but he is basically standing upright on every block. There is no way he will be able to do that in the NFL. Jeff Davidson will have his work cut out for him that is for sure. But hey, if he is a better than Wentworth and Harris, then I am good.

Babs looks like a college player going against pop warner kids in those videos. Kind of ridiculous looking. There will be a sharp learning curve in the NFL, no doubt. I don't think he'll amount to much, but I'd love to be wrong about that.

2015 Offseason - Free Agent/Draft Tracker

Pseudo Everything, I suppose when you said things like we're wasting a roster spot and brought up the fan enamoration with size along with the Toniu Fonoti comparisons, I assumed that you were upset with the signing and had over gauged the fan excitement. I'm sorry if I read too much into your post.

I do still disagree with your assessment of Fusco's draft position, though. I will stand by my statement that he was better than many players drafted before him and therefore was drafted later than he should have been (lucky for us) and it was based mostly on teams' lack of confidence in his ability based on the level of competition he faced. That was my whole point with that comparison. I'm not saying Babs is anywhere near the player that Fusco is, but I do think that if you write off guys because their competition isn't strong, you have a chance of missing out on serviceable players. He dominated the guys he played against, so for that reason I feel like he's worth giving a shot to see if he can at least hold his own against better players. If he doesn't work out, we lose nothing. If he turns out to be worth a roster spot, we gain something. With 30+ temporary roster spots, I see no harm in letting him take one of them and seeing how he fares.

Some of those blocks, oh man haha. There's a play around 1:40 where the DE basically just falls down on his own rather than getting pancaked again.

Newman had one pick 48 solo tackles and 25 Assist tackles ... Better than I thought
He was an upgrade over Robinson and Munnerlyn. Hopefully he gets a real shot. He should be starting across from Rhodes.

I'm not so sure he should be starting. We need to draft a CB within the first 3 rounds IMO and whoever that is, should be the starter. Not Newman. I don't feel comfortable relying on a 37 year old guy starting at CB. He's a solid depth guy/veteran though

But you feel comfortable with a rookie with zero experience in the defense starting? Over a 37 year old veteran who has played with Zimmer for 6 seasons?

You can tell by his comments that Zimmer doesn't believe that Robinson is the answer. And Captain is clearly more comfortable covering the slot.

I agree with PHP that they SHOULD draft a CB in 1-3, but I don't think they will just hand him the starting job. I think Newman will start and the guy they draft will hopefully be the heir apparent.

But as I always say, time will tell!!

That should make some people happy.

Now what are they going to do with that extra space? :)

That's what I'd do... at least until reached the Caribbean. :)

Seriously, I'm thinking they may use some of it to extend a few contracts and, of course, the offseason is far from over so they will probably sign a few more free agents.

Would this be a good time to invest in Rhodes?

Perhaps, although he's signed through 2016 so I'm guessing they'd prefer to wait a year. It would be a good time to invest in Harrison Smith though. He's in the final year of his rookie deal.
