I like this signing a whole lot, a very solid special teams guy and will compete at the safety position Win, Win. http://www.cincyjungle.com/2015/3/24/82 ... s-per-espn

Boom! Love the signing He's someone we can utilize in different ways on defense - I would guess he'll be playing a little OLB in Dime and Nickel. We'll see how training camp and preseason goes, but I'd be surprised if he was a full time player. I love his game, though. Very big and very fast, though he's never been a good coverage player, and can take poor angles at times. He can definitely lay some ferocious hits.

I like the signing for what it is - depth improvement. If he has to start, this could be bad.

Solid depth signing and he should help on special teams as well.

Mays had unlimited potential coming out of USC. If he can live up to some of his capabilities look out!

Finally.

I have always like Taylor Mays as a player. Friends and I used to joke around about who was most like T Mays on our football team back when we were seniors in high school and when Mays was still destroying people at USC.

Anyway, if nothing else, Taylor Mays is an immediate special teams upgrade and is better than Sandejo.

@GoesslingESPN: And now #Vikings announced they've signed Casey Matthews in addition to Taylor Mays.

let's pump the brakes on mays being the 2nd best safety on the roster. he's depth and probaby will have to do something great during camp to jump over blanton, exom and maybe even sendejo. i wonder if there's any thought to making mays a full time lb.

@christomasson
Among inside LBs last year Pro Football Focus rated Jasper Brinkley No. 16 of 60 & Casey Matthews No. 47. Brinkley 471 snaps, Casey 437
I'm not a big advanced stats guy but that sounds about right when it comes to Matthews. He was awful in every game I watched of theirs. It's likely just a depth/special teams move though so lets just hope he never sees a snap on defense.

Ugh.

He was brutal for Philadelphia.

He is better than Josh Kadu, Dom DeCicio though.

Well that's a new spin on the Green Bay poaching.

Anyone know what Alvin Rodgers and Jorge Nelson are up to these days? :twisted:

I recall the big thing about Mays was Carroll passed on him for another safety (Earl Thomas). Turns out to be a pretty smart move by Pete but at the time Mays was pretty convinced he was going to be drafted by the Seahawks in the 1st round. I'm hoping for a safety with better coverage skills but if they move him up in the box and he can contribute on special teams then that's a win I suppose.

As a starting safety, he's a terrible pair with Harrison Smith. As a nickel LB/S hybrid, he could be fun. And on special teams, he should be really fun.
