It's in his hands and then he's able to shift it to one hand and extend it. He's in control of the football, he got both feet down and he made a move common to the game. I think he met the criteria for a catch before the ball hit the ground and the impact forced it loose.
... that's understandable but there's a reasonable argument to be made that he did. I don't think this is a clear-cut case of the rules being enforced properly.
there's also the question of whether the replay showed indisputable visual evidence that warranted changing the call on the field. I suppose that comes down to the official's judgment regarding what constitutes "an act common to the game". I think shifting the ball from two hands to one and lunging for the goal line should qualify but i understand how this "process rule" can be interpreted differently.
You're welcome.

Good post, we will agree to disagree (If you agree, ;)). And SKOL Vikings! :v):

I like them too, along with New England and Baltimore. Those two teams don't get much love here either

The NFL official explanation:

The explanation: NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino tweeted shortly after the game: "Bryant going to the ground. By rule he must hold onto it throughout entire process of contacting the ground. He didn't so it is incomplete."

The refs just ruled the same-ish rule the opposite way with less evidence in the Den/Indy game.

Ridiculous.

If the Indy punt returner had possession, Dez definitely had possession. This is why so many people are pissed.

Yea but the rules pertaining to receiving a punt are completely different to that of receiving a catch, its apples to oranges.

The Colts not making that play will lose them the ball game. Just wait and see.

Going off what Mike Carey was saying it sounded like a punt returner needed to establish possession in order for the ball to not be a fumble. Carey also said that the returner needed to make a football move in order to prove the possession. That sounds familiar.
Maybe the rules are different but I would hope that a 'football move' would be consistent regardless if it is a punt return or a catch.
In this case, the football move was touching the ball and getting slammed to the ground by the defense while taking no steps apparently.

Edit: it may not mean much because of the hatred that Skip Bayless gets but he tweeted about this inconsistency, too.
