Post Game Remarks from Zimmer - Green Bay

Post by BGM »

Zimmer certainly was unhappy with the play at QB last night. He was blunt and to the point.

I found the following (written by the article writer, Eric Edholm) interesting:

"It was clear, when Ponder got word that he was starting Thursday night, that it was all on him. There would be no hiding in this game.

And he needed to stay healthy, too..."

I have to wonder how big a role this played. The guy obviously does not handle pressure well, and it was all on him. I think he lacks the one trait that Bridgewater seems to have in abundance, resilience. Bridgewater throws a pick or makes a mistake and it's on to the next play. Ponder seems to just fall into a continual downward spiral.

Zimmer is so awesome. No coach speak, no BS. It simply is what it is with him.

He doens't need to say that Ponder failed, the results speak for themselves and he doesn't disrespect us as fans by trying to sugar coat the truth.

Love it.

Just so it's clear to anyone reading this thread but not the article this quote...

""It was clear, when Ponder got word that he was starting Thursday night, that it was all on him. There would be no hiding in this game.

And he needed to stay healthy, too..."

...was from the article's writer, Eric Edholm, not Mike Zimmer.

For anyone interested: Zimmer's full post-game press conference can be watched here:

Thanks for clarifying that, Jim. I will amend my post.

After watching Zimmer's post-game press conference, I came away with the impression that the next week or so isn't going to be very pleasant for his team.

He gave a very fair assessment of Ponder's performance but also correctly pointed out his team's other shortcomings last night. I think we'll see a much better performance from the Vikes against Detroit.

From what Patterson said, Zimmer was already hot under the collar by halftime. He had a right to be. The team looked terrible.

The Vikings need Bridgewater back big time. But they also need to smack some smarts into the defense as well.

Right now the Vikings are becoming the Jekyll/Hyde team of the NFL. I wonder if it's going to be that way all season long?

I think so. And that does not surprise me with all the changes and struggles this season. What does surprise me is the depths to which they sank last night. It will go a long way toward telling me what kind of coach we have in Zimmer when they play Detroit. If they come out ready to play and stay competitive against another well-coached and talented, I will be very impressed. If they stumble and take too much time finding their footing, doubts will start springing up.

I love how Zimmer handles his press conferences. He definitely wasnt afraid to throw Ponder under the bus. It's nice to see a coach not sugar coat a terrible QB performance. Frazier did way too much of that

Wow, those first few minutes of that press conference, you can tell how angry Zimmer is. Its almost that he was so angry that he was at a loss for words. I do really appreciate his forthrightness and it is refreshing to get an honest assessment on the entire team's performance as opposed to some of Frazier's press conferences last year that left you wondering if you watched the same game. I realize that he probably said other things behind closed doors but purely from a fan perspective, its a nice change.

He seems to be someone who is consistently looking to improve which is a good mindset to have. I especially thought it was telling of this mindset when he referenced the Atlanta game last week saying that winning hides warts. He talked about some of the problems that the team had in the Atlanta game that no one focused on because they won but if they didn't correct those mistakes they weren't going to be successful moving forward. "My feelings are hurt too." Ha, that one really cracked me up. Hopefully they can use this performance to turn things around :smilevike:

That was a little rough to watch. Zimmer looked pretty defeated (hard to blame him). But there was a subtle fire still there. "If I have to hurt some feelings, I will. My feelings are hurt." I agree with you, Jim, the next week Zimmer might turn more into this guy:

I think he will.

When watching him talk, at first i thought he was really down, but then I started thinking he was inwardly seething and eager to get away from the podium. It's hard to say, He was probably feeling several emotions at once but I definitely don't think he's going to tolerate a performance like that without kicking some you-know-what in practice and team meetings over the next week.

That was the best part of last night....the frickin press conference. He was so PO'd. I love it that he calls it as it is. No hiding. I bet this week a lot of these overpaid wannabes get put on notice. Perform or get lost. Zim ain't here to wipe anyones ####. I wouldn't be surprised if the primary goal of this season is to understand who's on board and who isn't. Sure it's easy to say "we're bought in to coach Zimmer" but when it hits the fan I'm sure there's guys that show it and guys that don't. That's what matters. And the guys that don't will be gone soon. I'm completely on board with Coach Zimmer, and I honestly don't give a crap if we lose guys in the process. Coach Zimmer has the RIGHT mindset. Look at the greats, their mentality, and compare. This guy is a WINNER. He said that the Minnesota fans will be proud of the way this team plays. It's a work in progress....and I know as long as he's given full support from ownership as well as Spielman needs to listen to his opinion when it comes to personel, then we WILL be headed in the right direction and eventually we WILL be proud of our VIKINGS.
