How does communication with the QB on the field work during a game? We know that OC Norv Turner will be calling plays from the booth this season. Can someone in the booth speak directly into the QB's ear piece, or do the plays need to be relayed through someone on the sideline?

I saw this quote from Zimmer (about Cassel) after yesterday's game:
He played like a veteran, he had control in the huddle, the communication between Norv [Turner] and Scott [Turner] and him was very, very good.
and was wondering what Scott Turner's role in that communcation may be.

Yes, I'm pretty sure Norv will be speaking directly into the helmet of the starting QB.

The announcers made it sound like Norv couldn't call plays from the booth and was having to relay them down to the field in order for them to be sent out to the QB. I was watching an Oakland feed, so I'm not sure how accurate that is.

That's the way I understand it, as well. That's why they were talking about how he needed someone down there he can fully trust. That someone is his son, Scott, the quarterbacks coach.

See, and that's not what I got at all. I thought they said he needed someone he could trust so that that person could relay more of a "feeling" of how the players were responding/feeling, etc.

Maybe. Admittedly, I was only half listening. Had about enough of Paul Allen after 2 minutes. :D

But being on the sideline gives them a better feel for the game and allows direct communication with the quarterback. It might be too simplistic to divide play-callers into two categories, but at the core of the issue, it might come down to this: Is a coach the emotional type, or is he cold, hard and analytical?

"If you could talk to the quarterback from the booth, I might do it," Arians says. "But the way it is now, you lose valuable seconds relaying the call down. Sometimes you want to tell the quarterback what you're thinking: 'Hey, get it out of your hands quick and let's get 5 yards.' Or, 'Let's take a shot downfield. If it's not there, check it down.' But if you relay that down from the booth to the sideline, it never gets said right. You're like, 'No, that's not what I meant!'
Sounds like if you're in the booth you have to relay through someone on the sideline.

Me too. I can't stand him, other than his "AND HE'S LOOSE!" call. How many times did he need to make fun of McGloin's name? It wasn't funny the first time, why would it be funny the next 37 times?
The Devil whispered in the Viking's ear, "There's a storm coming." The Viking replied, "I am the storm." ‪#‎SKOL2018

I can't stand PA on the radio. For some reason I didn't notice how bad he was on the TV until Funky brought it up. Now I can't stand him at all. The only announcer I like less than him now is Garrison Keillor.

Used to love PA. Then his Homerism got a little too much for me. Now hes about on the level of Joe Buck.

His name escapes me now, but I love the guy that called the preseason games last year. And ND games. Man, I cant believe I forgot his name.

Mike Mayock is the name you are looking for.

I think you're probably right ... you're most likely in the minority if you like Paul Allen. I wonder if KFAN (Clear Channel) has any idea of just how many Vikings fans can't stand the guy.

If you love an obnoxious guy who screws up stats, bio info, players' names, plays going on at the time, a ton of other words, etc.--then, yeah, he'd be your man. I like him in small doses, but that's about it. His passion is fun, but how he was acting the other night, no way. Was he on something? He didn't know what the heck he was talking about most of the time, and he tries way too freakin' hard. He screwed up every few minutes. I wish I had the replay, because there were some REAL DOOZIES in there that I'd love to quote for examples. I turned my T.V. down right away, and I still caught a dozen things that made me go WTF. The guy just needs to settle down and get his info right. It's embarrassing to screw up that much on live T.V.
