How common is it for young QBs to get worse as their careers go on?

Ponder looks a little like he's given up. I don't think being the 3rd string QB sits well with him.

Spineless earthworms don't grow spines. Guy never had it up top, and never will. Should have cut him this offseason.

Unless, I'm forgetting about some other bust rotting on the 3rd team, Ponder will also be the highest paid #3 QB in the league.

I'd way rather be developing a young QB then holding onto Ponder.

This point has been made in the post already, but when was the last time a third-stringer developed into something worthwhile? I'd rather have the staff focusing on our current young QB that needs developed.

Disagree, 3rd stringers turn into good backups all the time, and Ponder is one highly paid 3rd stringer.

I keep going back and forth between "the Vikings couldn't find a better 3rd string QB at this point, even if they wanted to" and "it does them little good to keep this guy on the roster in any capacity".

But I think ultimately it comes down to the path of least resistance. Cutting Ponder would only cost them money. His salary is fully guaranteed, so they'd save $0, and then they'd have to pay his replacement. At this point, it's easiest for the Vikings to just let him ride for another season while they concentrate on the starter and the rookie.

Couldn't agree more. The coaches need to focus on what's important for now. If we get down to our third guy this season, it might as well be Ponder. Adding another developmental guy just steals time from Teddy.

I guess I have a hard time naming BACKUPS, sorry. But Hasslebeck, Warner, Matt Flynn, and Matt Cassel were all 3rd stringers at one point in their career.

Are you really saying 3rd stringers dont ever become decent backups?

They do and the Vikings will soon have a new one. It might be this season. It might be in 2015 but it's obviously going to happen.

At this point, the Ponder debate has boiled all the way down to how soon the Vikings should get rid of him.
