Sidney Rice - WR - Seahawks

Sidney Rice has retired from the NFL after 7 seasons.

Rice is just 27 years old, and theoretically should be in the prime of his career. But Rice has missed a total of 31 games in his seven seasons. He's reportedly retiring because of a history of concussions. Rice was knocked out a number of times in his playing career and also was trying to return from a torn ACL. What once looked like a promising career after an 83-catch, 1,312-yard, 8-touchdown 2009 season with the Vikings has ended in sad fashion. Rice caught a total of 243 passes for 3,592 yards and 30 scores. He went to one Pro Bowl.

Free agent QB Kyle Orton doesn't plan to retire and wants to play this season.

Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones says Orton was going to report to training camp. Apparently the Cowboys didn't want him there, and wanted him to retire, so they cut him. Brandon Weeden is Tony Romo's backup. Orton will try to find a job as a clipboard holder likely at some point near the end of summer.

I think Orton just wanted to the the hell out of Dallas.

Kyle Orton wouldn't be a bad pickup for the Vikings, to replace you-know-who, who is playing his last year in Minnesota and unlikely to contribute this year. Just so long as Orton is fine being a second or third string backup and wouldn't throw a hissy fit about it.

Buccaneers released OG Carl Nicks.

Per FOX Sports' Jay Glazer, the sides reached an "amicable settlement," which probably best translates as an injury settlement. Nicks is dealing with a career-threatening toe injury. Still only 29 years old, his NFL future is in serious doubt, as ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Friday Nicks has decided to "step away from the game," though he has not yet formally retired. Nicks was owed a $7 million base salary. The Bucs now have the weakest depth chart at offensive guard in football, with Oniel Cousins, Patrick Omameh, Jamon Meredith, and rookie Kadeem Edwards competing for two starting spots. It's a major concern for the efficiency of their run game.
