If we can get a 3rd rounder for him I would consider that an amazing win for the Vikings front office.

No kidding. Heck, a sixth-rounder would be fine. I doubt they get more than that.

Man, it's hilarious to see how these "news" items spread and become reports. A lot of writers are just reading each other and repeating conjecture until it starts to sound like actual news. That isn't to say the Vikings won't seek to trade Ponder because that does seem like a strong possibility but the ESPN.com source for this story that came "via CBS Sports" is almost certainly Ben Goessling, who wrote the following:

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcnorth/post/_ ... f-business
But if Cassel does opt out of his deal, the Vikings will have even more uncertainty at the quarterback position. Christian Ponder is still under contract, but it seems likely the Vikings would try to get what they can for him in a trade.
Goessling is clearly just guessing. Larry Hartstein, of CBSports.com quoted him and wrote:
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/page ... ta-vikings
Quarterback Christian Ponder is under contract for 2014, but "it seems likely the Vikings would try to get what they can for him in a trade," reports ESPN.com. The team's first-round pick in 2011 hasn't panned out.
Then www.sportsworldreport.com picked that up and wrote:
CBSSports.com reports the Vikings are exploring trade options in regards to quarterback Christian Ponder. Instead of simply releasing him to the free agent market, Minnesota is hoping a team in need of a player will make a trade on him.
Suddenly, Goessling's "seems likely" becomes "the Vikings are exploring trade options" and sites like yardbarker.com are reporting:
The Minnesota Vikings have apparently had enough of quarterback Christian Ponder and will reportedly see what they can get for him via a trade, according to ESPN.com (via CBS Sports).
The rumor mill churns!

I got a good laugh out of the 3rd round pick comment

I would be absolutely shocked if we could get a 7th round pick for him. Why would anyone in the right mind give up anything for ponder, when they can just wait it out and sign him once he's released. Same as we did with Cassel last year

LOL! Sorry, it's just that I read the Goessling comment this morning so when I saw "according to ESPN.com (via CBS Sports)." I had a feeling I was already familiar with the original source for the report.

It's just a speculation-turned-rumor but I think it's likely to prove accurate anyway. I think the Vikings probably will seek to trade Ponder. He hasn't been impressive enough to keep as a starter and the situation has become pretty poisonous for him in Minnesota so moving on is probably a good idea for everyone involved. The potential wrench in the works would be if Cassel opts out and decides to play elsewhere. That could lead to the Vikes keeping Ponder just so they have a QB signed to their roster.

Why would you trade a pick for this guy? If his trajectory continues he'll be readily available on the open market next offseason. Silly...

The only interesting Ponder thing is to see if, however unlikely, he experiences some kind of positive change under this new coaching regime. I have no illusions on how unlikely this is, but it isn't impossible. Just highly improbable.

Who in their right mind would trade anything for Christian Ponder, let alone a 3rd rounder? Nobody is going to give us anything for him. We might as well let him finish his contract as a bench warmer. Any team who is that desperate will probably trade for Kirk Cousins before they think about trading for Ponder.

I'd be happy getting a shoelace for him.

I don't think even Spielman is stupid enough to think that anyone would trade for Ponder.

Most they could ever get for him is a 6th rounder. And that's even pushing it.

He has no value. Especially to us. Cut the guy the minute no other team shows interest...

Jeffbleedspurple wrote: I am hoping the same kind of management that would draft a Ponder in the 1st round, 12th overall. I heard rumor of New England for our Seattle pick and Ponder for Ryan Mallet, Norv said so. lol
That's how I was thinking he'd be traded too. To trade Ponder away, we'd probably have to give up a draft pick or two with him. Trading Ponder alone isn't going to attract any teams.
