Also, the Vikings and Redskins have reached out to the 49ers on offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Could be interviews coming there too.
Looks like Roman is definitely being considered by the Vikings.

A lot of media speculation had him linked to the Lions' position, but it seems Whisenhunt is their likely hire. The Lions' job seems to be widely considered the "plum" job currently, which makes sense with their stability at QB and the talent they have throughout the team. They are stacked with talent and really need solid coaching to put it together.

I personally think we need someone with a vision of what we need to do at the QB position. I don't know who that would be--Jay Gruden, Roman, other?--but some of the defensively oriented coaches leave me a bit worried concerning this issue.

Whisenhunt would be nice, but it seems he will be Detroit bound.

Cleveland denied interest in Bob Stoops, and that is an interesting candidate in my mind. I think his coaching philosophy and strategy would translate well in the NFL.

College coaches have seemed to have more and more success in the NFL as of late as well.

I think this is potentially a good job to land in the NFL...the lack of a clear cut QB can be a blessing and a curse to an extent. Not saying that is the only issue that needs addressed, but QB can clearly secure the fate of a coach...for better or worse. The pieces of the puzzle surrounding the QB position seem solid. There are weapons on the roster, and with the right system/game plan, I think this team can compete.

The team today asked for permission to speak with Jay Gruden...I like that fit the most. I just hope Spielman and the future staff have a vision/game plan at QB...and not just hope and pray for dumb luck to fall in our lap via the draft, or stretch at QB...see Christian Ponder

We're avoiding Whizenhunt because he is awful with finding QBs. Warner was in ARZ with a roster built by Dennis Green. He trotted out 4-5 QBs after Warner retired and thought Kolb was worth trading a 2nd and a decent CB for. Skelton, Hall, Lindley, Anderson...I mean woof. He's been blessed with Rivers and Warner. NO NO NO

You don't plan your franchise around an interim stadium. You still build a team for a dome. I am not saying Roman isn't one to look at, just that the 9ers can't really be compaired with the Vikings.. They already tried to mold the team after them.

So today I read that the Vikings are talking to San Francisco offensive coordinator Greg Roman. What are your guys thoughts on him? I really like the personnel packages he uses, and formation shifts he employs, seems to be a bit predictable as a play caller at times though. My ideal candidate would be Mike Zimmer the Bengals defensive coordinator. He has done some impressive work in Cincinnati, and despite quite a few injuries this season, they were one of the top defensive units in the league. He also seems like a no nonsense type of guy, which is a definite plus, given recent struggles in that regard with this team.

My other thought is how much do all these guys ACTUALLY have to do with the success of their respective offensive/defensive units? Obviously Rick has more than just that to go off of, since he will actually be interviewing these guys, but all we as fans are able to evaluate is how well their players did for them. Sometimes I feel like my opinions of these potential candidates may be completely off base and purely conjecture. Haha, so it goes with NFL armchair general managers I suppose.

Don't know anything about him, but if he's responsible for the 49ers shift to the read-option, I'd be a little concerned. Not just because the Vikings have nobody who could run it, but because it might influence a top 10 quarterback draft pick and I'm not convinced that this fad will last long in the NFL.

I read that Washington is also talking to him. That would be an infinitely better fit for him.

I guess I'm a fan of Roman. But look at what he has to work with, a great o-line, good running game, Kaep, Crabtree, Boldin, Davis. I seriously question some of his play calling in the redzone though.

What are your guys thoughts on Hue Jackson? If he can go 8-8 with the Raiders he must be decent.

I think the zone read looks (which they didn't use much this season, from what I saw) was more due to the skill set of Kaepernick, as opposed to Roman's philosophy. Before CK became the starter they ran a more traditional (albeit very creative) offense with Alex Smith. He was also Harbaugh's offensive coordinator at Stanford, where they ran a pro-style, drop back passing offense with Andrew Luck. But I agree, the read option is not something we want our offense centered around. With Roman, I don't think we'd see it featured by any means. I do think he would be thrilled to have a running back like Adrian to build his offense around.

I have seen his name tossed around also, and I honestly don't know a whole lot about him to give my opinion. I will say it would seem he didn't get a fair shake in Oakland, given what he was working with, an 8-8 season is impressive. Being fired after that one season at 8-8 seems a bit extreme to me, but I guess nothing surprises me when it involved the late Al Davis.

Tough to evaluate coaching success and disconnect it from exceptional player execution. The 9ers offense didn't put up huge numbers for much of this year, then Crabtree comes back and they look dangerous.

Jackson should have never been fired. The reason he was was because he pushed for Carson. I think Hue would be an excellent offensive coordinator at the very least. He at least deserves a shot at that.
