Thankfully we have an in-house route-running technician in Greg Jennings to hopefully help Patterson's development.

Also sounds a lot like a guy that was drafted in 2010.VikingPaul73 wrote: "Raw", "explosive", needs to improve "route running" and needs "refinement"....Very Very nice description of Troy Williamson
Not trying to be a downer....LOVE the 1st 2 picks and happy they stayed away from Te'o.....just think they gave up too much for this guy...again, HOPE I am wrong
"He shows excellent vertical speed, especially for someone his size, and can be intimidating to a cornerback when isolated on the perimeter. He has the size of a tight end with the speed, agility and ball skills of a wide receiver. He needs a lot of work on his route running skills as he tends to round off his breaks and will telegraph his routes with too much upper body movement. He can make acrobatic type catches but will drop some very catchable passes due to lapses in concentration. He is not a very physical blocker on the edge in spite of his massive size advantage."
"runs sloppy routes and is raw with his route-running in general. Needs to be more consistent with his concentration on the ball. Blocking must improve at the next level, which is tough to swallow given his size. Can make strides in this area due to natural measurables."
Demaryius Thomas turned out just fine, didn't he?
We don't have to be so pessimistic, not every WR is Troy Williamson (thank god).

Yep. And lets hope Patterson listens. Hes pretty yung, big chip on shoulder it seems. A lot like Moss. And CC was good for him.dead_poet wrote:Thankfully we have an in-house route-running technician in Greg Jennings to hopefully help Patterson's development.
Im looking forward to Wright, Simpson and Patterson all having deep fly routes, might work since 90% of our D is short. stuff.

I think Spielman thinks he hit it big getting floyd and rhodes and probably rightfully so, but that enabled him in his head to go "crazy." Patterson has to pan out now, and I just hate the idea that we have patterson + 0 compared to like robert woods + arthur brown or even Teo + a pick or two extra.
All in all I think we got some super good value and BPA's at #23 and #25, loved that. But then I think we gave it right back over paying for Patterson. Maybe I'll eat my words on Patterson some day years from now but that's how I see it.
Overall B- for this draft since it's pretty much over on day 1...

Re: ** Official 2013 Draft Thread **
I'm pretty happy with the picks. I think LB is now the biggest hole on the team, but it is hard to get mad about these picks. All 3 of these guys have the potential to be elite NFL talent, so quality over quantity on day 1. Time will tell how well it all works out.
Kind of curious how the scenario played out with regards to MLB. They must have really liked Patterson, to sacrifice so much to get him. I do think that given how low their 2nd and 3rds were they probably felt they wouldn't get a shot at the other MLB so they moved back up. They must not have been keen on Ogletree enough to risk the pick on him.
I suspect that now the big question is who plays MLB?

I think Woods will go early tomorrow and it will be interesting to see where Te'o and Brown ultimately fall but I don't know if the Vikings ever realistically had a shot at both. We got 3 players with solid 1st round grades so I'll give Spielman the benefit of the doubt. He hasn't been too bad in the later rounds anyway (Robison, Griffen, Sullivan, etc.) so we may still find a solid LB.mondry wrote:I think Spielman thinks he hit it big getting floyd and rhodes and probably rightfully so, but that enabled him in his head to go "crazy." man, i try not to drink the koolaid but i'm very excited about our picks tonight. i was a little annoyed about trading back into the first for a wide receiver but the more i thought about it the better i liked it. he's an amazing playmaker. the floyd pick was incredible. i would have bet almost anything that he wouldn't be around by the time we picked. spielman must have been giddy. i love the rhodes pick too but like many of you i'll take a wait and see approach to see how he fits our system.
for some giving up a 2,3,4, and 7 seems too high for almost any player. but i'm not bothered by that if you truly believe the guy you're getting is going to be a game-changer. apparently our front office thinks so and as far as i'm concerned they deserve the benefit of the doubt because they appear to know what they're doing.
geeze.....pretty excited right now.

the 2nd and 3rd round picks are essentially what we gave up for a 1st. the 4th round is a 50 50 chance of a guy making the team, and the 7th round guy is training camp filler. I don't think that is too much.

Love Floyd, like Rhodes... intrigued by Patterson, but that was a HUGE price to pay. They went big... you have to give them that.

I keep thinking that if he is as good as Julio Jones or close, we will be fine. I think Atl. gave up way more than that.vikeinmontana wrote:man, i try not to drink the koolaid but i'm very excited about our picks tonight. i was a little annoyed about trading back into the first for a wide receiver but the more i thought about it the better i liked it. he's an amazing playmaker. the floyd pick was incredible. i would have bet almost anything that he wouldn't be around by the time we picked. spielman must have been giddy. i love the rhodes pick too but like many of you i'll take a wait and see approach to see how he fits our system.
