The 2013 Vikings Draft

Post by Purple bruise »

I thought that this would be a good general topic to discuss several of the aspects and decisions on the 2013 Viking's draft.
I read and interesting article that might turn out to change the Viking's plans on which LB to choose if it came down to one or the other top prospects. Seems as though Alec Ogletree was arrested and charged with DUI (dumb butt) and this certainly will affect where he ends up getting drafted. That means he might slip all the way down the board to where the Vikings might have a shot at him, if they wanted to.

I just noticed that this article was already mentioned on the College and Draft topic but this just might pertain to the Vikings draft.

If Ogletree slips down to where the Vikings can draft him then they should do it. The second round would have to be a receiver though. There should be a lot of good ones at point in the draft still. They could be looking at Terrence Williams, Justin Hunter, or Robert Woods. I would really love to see them get Cordarelle, especially if Percy leaves, but he may go way before the Vikings pick in the first round.

Ogletree was also suspended at Georgia for 4 games, presumably for the same thing.

After reading about this, I'd stay far away from him now.

Ogletree was suspended four games in 2012 for violating the Georgia football team's substance abuse policy. He allegedly failed "positive drug tests," plural. He was also suspended once more in 2010 for stealing a motor scooter from fellow UGA student.

Players like that usually don't slip that far over a DWI. The Vikes would be content to draft the next LB in rounds 2 or 3 or later.

Meh, it depends. A lot of teams probably already had him red flagged. I guarantee you that a few teams took him off the draft board after this arrest.

Anyway, I would rather have Minnesota take Kevin Minter or John Bostic in round 2. Bostic is a beast.

They should put a statement out that any player whom violates the law, ie; dui, dwi, or failed drug test, their invitation to the combine gets rejected and the next guy up takes there place.

I was really hoping to see the Vikes pick Ogletree, but after getting a dui and has failed drug tests under his belt. Big Problems ahead for the team that chooses him.

I don't buy that. Look at Randy Moss, Percy Harvin, Jarred Allen, Cris Carter all of these are players who either failed a drug test or/and got a DUI and they were not problems to the Vikings, at least not legal problems. Or hell, look at Ray Lewis, he committed a double homicide and still continued to play. There is an even longer list of players on other teams, I just focused on the Vikings. Failing a drug test in college and getting a DUI in college does not spell the end. It may be that Ogletree never has another issue again.

How does Onterrio Whizzanator Smith factor into that list

A detailed list of NFL players recently busted for crimes. I did not realize that the list was so extensive

I truly only see 4 needs that really held us back last year.

CB - When Cook Went out I could tell a difference, and when Winfield went out I also got nervous. So with that in mind we need a top CB.

WR - this is an Obvious need, but I think Percy, Jarius, Simpson, and "Greg Childs Hope he comes back, that guy looks as though he could be dangerous"

QB - A good back up I think Ponder has the skills and mind set to be an elite if we give him time to develop, reminds me of a young Drew Brees, Cant always be so quick to give up on people, they need time to develop. Webb needs to be moved to receiver.

DL - A strong pass rusher, run stopper. Cool to see Ndamukong Suh come to the Vikings, Kick to the growing was Hogwash, there is no way he meant to do that. id do some trading to get him he is a Beast.

DL is certainly an outside possibility for us. We need an heir to Kevin Williams and have a strong need for a true NT. It also one of the deeper positions in this draft.

LB/WR are both obvious. Not sure how that will work out. I think both positions will get attention in FA and the Draft, the question is in what combination. I wonder if there is something to the speculation that the Vikings will pick off Brad Jones from the Packers.

CB: I agree, but lots of FA players available, albeit at a premium. I would be suprised if this position went higher than a 3rd round pick for the Vikings outside of a BPA situation.

The question I have is who is going to drop? The draft is deep at DL, so there could be a run at this position earlier in the 1st round which could cause some guys to fall.

It'll be an interesting offseason for sure.
