Vikings trying to trade Hunter

As the #Vikings try to sort out their cap situation, sources continue to say they've been trying to trade Danielle Hunter, who's got an $18 million roster bonus due on Sunday.

Hunter has a $25.83M cap figure. The Vikings need to clear space to make their new deals official.

Im about to lose my mind over Kwesi and this new regime if they trade hunter. As bad as the saints cap management is, the fact that they just saved $80 million by not releasing a single player further proves the Vikings can keep hunter. This is by choice. We’re not being forced to trade hunter. And it has nothing to do with cousins. His contract saved $15 million. They are paying a 29 year old linebacker $13 mill, a 31 year old WR $16 mill and a 33 year old safety another $13 mill. But let’s trade our 27 year old elite defensive end and not touch their contracts.

I’ve said for how long that this is the one player outside of JJ you do not touch!! I don’t care about the injuries. They were fluke injuries. And the most serious (the neck) had zero effect on him last year. I will officially throw the towel in on this regime if this is the route they go and they trade hunter. Unless we get some ridiculous haul, which I don’t foresee, I’m done with Kwesi only a few months in. And anyone that knows me after being on this board for 10 years, I always give players, coaches, GMs some time. But I honestly can’t deal with this sort of stupidity.

As for cousins, what’s the point of extending him when you’re going to tear down the little we had on defense?. If you want to trade hunter, then you should’ve traded cousins along with it and done a full rebuild. You’re setting cousins up for failure if you’re going to trot another 31st ranked defense out there. I don’t care how good your offense is.

Why we haven’t restructured a single contract yet is beyond me. This isn’t a hard concept. Plenty of ways to save money and instead, they are shopping hunter BY CHOICE. Not because they have to or are forced to. Absolutely baffling that we’re paying all this money to aging veterans but attempt to go this route instead. Vikings fans are going to run this guy out of town if he moves hunter. And given they’ve been “trying to trade him” shows me that they aren’t getting the compensation they want. And if they dump him for a couple mid round picks, I’m literally going to throw up. Only way I’m good with this is if we get a stupid haul for it which again I don’t foresee.

I’m pretty sure I have steam coming out of my ears right now.

I remember a few seasons ago complaining about the organization not fully understanding who they were. And what they needed to do to achieve the ultimate goal of a sb.

Starting to think it's an ownership trait.

Wonder what we may get if we move him.

*sigh*

I don't get this offseason. At all.

That’s the problem, they are clearly struggling to trade him for what they want. In turn, if we dump him for a couple mid rounders I might be jumping into the middle of the ocean. ONLY way I’m good with this (similar to how I was with diggs) is if we get a haul. I don’t think that’s happening. So keep the guy and restructure his deal. Don’t overthink this

I think ownership absolutely knows what they have, or they don't fire the GM who put most of this roster together.

Where I think the issue lies with ownership is they are far too willing to sacrifice the ability to build a SB roster in a couple of seasons in order to win 8 games in the upcoming one. They are unwilling to risk a bad season to get better in the future and that makes any GM's job really, really hard. So they go out and get KAM to fix Spielman's mistakes, and then don't allow him to actually do anything that could make that rebuild more successful.

I don't agree with most of what you post, but this is spot on. I feel like Bill O'Brian is running things right now and just don't understand what the plan is.

Reading between the lines I’m getting the impression you don’t like the idea of shopping hunter.

How much would you give for a player that has missed two seasons? Or don't you think that's a concern? If we were looking at Hunter from a different teams view I'm sure many would say will he show up this year? If so for how long. If he stays here and gets hurt again do you still keep paying that kind of CAP for nothing? Does Hunter even fit in a 3-4? I thought the 3 DL guys were bigger than the average 4-3 DE. Hunter at 26 million is a big risk for any team. Or am I way off. It's not like he played all year and had 15 sacks and a bunch of hurries. I'm sure they are shopping a bunch of people. Would you give up a high pick for Dirty Harry? Dantzler? Theilen? Cook?

Or maybe, just maybe, they've decided to stop mortgaging the future for the present. Maybe they want to get out of the salary cap shenanigans game. Maybe they decided a guy who has missed that much time is not worth $26M. Maybe they know more about the injury situations than we do - maybe they are actually worse than reported, maybe they are actually better than reported and Hunter dogged it because he didn't like Zimmer or the training staff.

A bunch we don't know. Your original instincts about giving new players/coaches/GM some time is the correct one.

That's what I mean. You don't extend Kirk and then trade Hunter. That is selling low on Hunter, and missing selling high on Kirk. You are either in or out imo. Everyone wants to look at the Rams as an example of why we extended Kirk (which is done, whatever). The rams also went all in. It paid off. We are determined to straddle the fence, and it isn't working. 8-9 w here we come.

Maybe we get a haul for him if he goes. Waiting for something to actually happen. Heh.

Exactly. This is why this makes zero sense. This front office seems like they are extremely overwhelmed and unprepared right now. This is exactly what worried me about letting Spielman go. Clearly we needed a new coach, but I dont know if a new GM was the answer. Given how free agency has gone so far and this management of contracts (or lack there of), I'm petrified for this draft.

The cap is a joke. The need to shed salary is a lie. The Saints have shown this the past few years. They just restructured and converted like 80 million in the hole to plus 30 and are probably going to get Watson. We just have a bad front office now it would appear.

Yeah the saints have just flipped in total, $105 million and didnt release a single player. But meanwhile, the Vikings are sitting here struggling to add 2+2 and possibly trading away their best player

If Hunter is ready to return to all NFL form than don't trade him. If he isn't get what you can and save 26 million on the cap.
I'm thinking that Vikings management knows better than we do which of those two scenarios are most likely.
