I had a feeling they would re-sign Mitchell. The move makes sense.

Hahaha. I like the move though. Marvin is good at what he does and we needed outside linebacker depth.dead_poet wrote:Done with FA? Nope! You guys! LB problem solved!
Marvin Mitchell - LB - Vikings
Vikings re-signed LB Marvin Mitchell.
A reserve linebacker and special teamer, Mitchell started one game in 2012, but played only 46 snaps on defense. He'll serve in a similar role in 2013.

I was wondering why the Vikings weren't showing interest in this guy. Does he have character concerns? Seems like the kind of potential that would be good to give a shot to ... but I don't know a whole lot about him.dead_poet wrote:Darrius Heyward-Bey - WR - Free Agent
The St. Paul Pioneer Press thinks the Vikings could "try to get" free agent Darrius Heyward-Bey on a "low-cost deal."
Since being released by the Raiders almost three weeks ago, Heyward-Bey has visited the Colts and Lions. He left both cities without a contract in hand.
The Vikings make a ton of sense as a landing spot for the former No. 7 overall pick, and he'd at least be a better field-stretcher than Jerome Simpson.

Good question. I know more about him as a college player than what he's done as a pro. Is there anyone out there that has watched Heyward-Bey's pro career?Cliff wrote: I was wondering why the Vikings weren't showing interest in this guy. Does he have character concerns? I took it to mean because of the lack of overall depth at the position.losperros wrote:

Also, I guess I'm wondering why the PP says: "The Vikings make a ton of sense as a landing spot for the former No. 7 overall pick." Is it because he can stretch the field or is it because of the way the Vikings play offense? Or both?

The SPPP is a little wacky. This is kind of random. I wouldn't believe much of what they have to say. Not that long ago they were suggesting Cassel was possibly "too good to be a backup" and "he brings solid credentials and has had several outstanding seasons." Yeah? Outstanding? Several?dead_poet wrote:Darrius Heyward-Bey - WR - Free Agent

Actually, that comment about the Vikings making a ton of sense as a landing spot didn't come from the PP but from whoever wrote the Rotoworld blurb dead_poet posted. Confusing, eh?losperros wrote:Good question. I know more about him as a college player than what he's done as a pro. Is there anyone out there that has watched Heyward-Bey's pro career?

In other words, there's really nothing more to the idea that the Vikings could sign Heyward-Bey than if you or I had written it here. Goessling is just pointing out that Heyward-Bey is out there, unsigned, and one of many options for the Vikes.Although the Vikings have the flexibility to look elsewhere in the first round, it seems hard to believe they wouldn't acquire another receiver -- particularly if they can find a big wideout to stretch the field. There's enough depth at receiver in this draft that the Vikings could come back to the position in the second or third round if they don't take one in the first round.
Wide receivers coach George Stewart had good things to say about USC's Robert Woods in an interview with the Los Angeles Times last week, and California's Keenan Allen could be an option for the Vikings in the first round. The Vikings also could try to get former Raiders receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey on a low-cost deal. But after signing Jennings, they at least have someone they can count on at the position.
Heyward-Bey does get open -- and I mean on deep as well as intermediate routes. The problem is that he has two of the worst hands you'll see for an NFL receiver. Can he improve those hands? I don't know, but he has been in the league for a while already and he remains undependable. That said, if the price is low enough, maybe the deal could be defended.MelanieMFunk wrote:
With that being said, Heyward-Bey on a cheap deal wouldn't hurt. We need depth at the position anyway. He's underachieved in a big way out there in Oakland, but who DOES succeed and achieve in Oakland? I think a fresh start could be good for him. He's still young--and has a lot to prove. I wouldn't hate the move. I still think SPPP is pulling crap outta their butt, though.
That makes sense. The Vikings definitely need to improve their depth at CB.Cliff wrote: I took it to mean because of the lack of overall depth at the position.
I see. Thanks for that, Jim.Mothman wrote:In other words, there's really nothing more to the idea that the Vikings could sign Heyward-Bey than if you or I had written it here. Goessling is just pointing out that Heyward-Bey is out there, unsigned, and one of many options for the Vikes.
