This. Goodell can do basically whatever he wants. Including punishing him for fighting this under the guise of him not being sorry enough.

I think Goodell will be gone before next season starts. I have a weird feeling that is telling me that...

I just heard the tape on ESPN, and Vincent actually assured Peterson that it would be a 2 game suspension. The "neutral" arbitrator claims that Vincent was not speaking on the NFL's behalf, and was essentially just trying to assist Peterson in a positive decision.

Sounds like a load of #### to me.

Just heard it.

This is unbelievable. Henderson's written decision states that Vincent never promised AP anything. It's a blatant lie, and the tape, blasted clearly across national TV this morning, proves it.

AP has filed a suit in federal court this morning, according to ESPN.

But Vincent's statement helped AD make a decision! What a disgusting display by the NFL.

Yeah, the part that gets me is that this conversation seems like it happened when AD was deciding on taking a plea deal or not. If that's the case, Vincent's "guidance" played a huge role in AD choosing to go with the "no contest" plea deal to get back on the field sooner as opposed to waiting for a potential "not guilty" verdict from the grand jury. That's messed up.

Best case here is that Vincent just didn't know what the suspension would be and it seems like he lied to AD about the suspension. Worst case is that Vincent's words essentially put a criminal stamp on AD's legal (not football) record.

Thanks for the link. The NFL has truly botched this and they look vindictive instead of just.

From Mike Florio at PFT:

NFLPA files suit challenging Peterson suspension
The goal via the litigation becomes securing reinstatement for Peterson as early as possible in the offseason, so that he’s not required to wait until April 15 for the NFL to revisit his status. Likewise, Peterson hopes to minimize the number of game checks he’ll lose.

That number currently is six. The legal action argues that Peterson’s punishment should be only two games.

At some point (possibly today), I’ll pick through the 74 pages in search of specific information, allegations, and/or tidbits of interest. Until then, here’s the key information: The NFLPA contends that the suspension reflects a retroactive application of a new policy, that the arbitrator was not impartial, and that the suspension imposes discipline not permitted by the labor deal (e.g., a requirement that Peterson be evaluated by mental health professionals).

Sounds like Vincent was much more explicit about the punishment than I had expected. It was hard to know initially if it was a wishy-washy "you might just get two games if you're good" and "I don't think you would be subject to the new policy".

Exactly. Nothing really AD can do. Except maybe play for us next year, with a reconstructed contract? Where ever he plays, I bet he puts up 1200+ yards. With a team I cant stand.

If Goodell had said those things, then AP might have a case. But since Vincent didn't have the authority to make those offers than I don't think there's a case, especially against the NFL. AP doesn't have anything in writing so there is no binding agreement - all he has is a case of Vincent lying to him and can't imagine that would hold up in court. Don't ever remember someone winning a court case because someone verbally lied to them.

Imagine if he signed within the division. The only team would probably be Detroit but I would throw up

If Vincent did not have the authority, then why was he making promises? Who told Vincent to call Peterson? Who gave him the authority to make the call or told him to make the call? And a verbal contract is just as valid as a written one. This isn't a case of he said this, but no I didn't. It's on tape. There is no way Vincent can claim he did not say it.
