NFL Radio is backing off their zimmer report. Says he will be brought in to assist the qb coach as the vikings are looking for an experienced coach who has developed qbs. they may dip into the college ranks and hire off cord with qb experience,

So many media outlets report different things. Makes it hard to determine what is going on. We should all wait until the Vikes officially report it

Yeah, it's understandable for any new HC/staff hire to be excited. I'm excited for the "hope of getting better", I have no illusions that we've found the Holy Grail.Mothman wrote:The hype machine is really rolling for these coaches. Expectations are clearly sky high.
Here are a few views in each direction:
An article that at least tries to compare the Zimmer hire to back when Frazier was hired:
More at the link:
http://www.bringmethenews.com/2014/01/1 ... ke-zimmer/
Takeaways from this article:
“FRAZIER: Leslie served as the defensive coordinator for Minnesota from 2007-2009 before taking over as interim head coach midway through the 2010 season. Frazier took over a unit that in 2006 ranked eighth in the league in yards allowed and 14th in the league in points allowed.”
“It should be noted that in Frazier’s three full years as head coach of the team, two of those seasons Minnesota finished outside the top-30 in the league in points allowed, and didn’t finish in the top-15 of the league in yards allowed.”
“Zimmer has consistently improved a squad that was subpar when he took over, and his defensive rankings are consistent, leading the Bengals to a top-half finish in pass defense every year, while doing the same in the run game in five of his six years with Cincinnati.”
“The one major advantage Zimmer holds over Frazier is NFL experience in a high-ranking position, as Frazier had served as a defensive coordinator in the NFL for just six seasons before becoming a head coach, while Zimmer has been in the same position for 13 years with three different teams.”
“No way to know for sure if Zimmer is the answer, but his resume says he may be set up for success, perhaps better than Frazier was when he took over.”

And then, a sobering list of how the last 15 DC’s hired as HC’s have fared: http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/Past ... _bag011514
The previous 15 defensive coordinators turned head coaches:
Year, Hiring Team, Coach, Defensive Coordinator for...
2013, Jacksonville, Gus Bradley, Seattle
2012, Kansas City, Romeo Crennel, Kansas City, Oakland, Dennis Allen, Denver, Indianapolis, Chuck Pagano, Baltimore
2011, Carolina, Ron Rivera, San Diego, Minnesota, Leslie Frazier, Minnesota
2010, N/A, N/A, N/A
2009, NY Jets, Rex Ryan, Baltimore, St. Louis, Steve Spagnuolo, NY Giants, Tampa Bay, Raheem Morris*, Tampa Bay, Detroit, Jim Schwartz, Tennessee
2008, Atlanta, Mike Smith, Jacksonville
2007, Dallas, Wade Phillips, San Diego, Pittsburgh, Mike Tomlin, Minnesota

Who knows where Zimmer will end up? History does not exactly support the next Belichick in our midst.

I can see where it would give you pause, but Adam Zimmer was an assistant with the Saints and Chiefs before coming to the Bengals. He was an assistant on the Super Bowl winning Saints team. He has only worked with his Dad one year (last year) on the Bengals as Assistant DB Coach. An article on Bengals.com (which was written by Geoff Hobson, a Mike Brown employee), said that they expect Adam to go with Mike to the Vikings.Eli wrote:So, basically, they're starting to hire their own kids? It's a little scary if that gives anyone confidence in the staff.

Super Bowl winning Saints team? ?
Oh, the one with the * next to it? Bounty Gate? and all that jazz? (I'm giving you a hard time MountainGirl… you just hit a sore spot w/ that mention).

So, are there any potential hires that would get you a little excited?Eli wrote:Does George Edwards have any kids?

Lol. I kind of feel that way whenever anyone mentions the Patriots Super Bowls and how great Bellichick is. They should have a "Spygate" tag on all their Super Bowls under Bellichick. I think most teams in other divisions would also love to play the Jets, Bills, and Dolphins twice each year. That might make anyone look like a genius. As far as bountygate, I never heard Adam Zimmer connected to that.Texas Vike wrote:

I would say this article makes it a done deal of Adam Zimmer to the Vikes.

It doesn't but I think if you look at ANYWAY a head coach is acquired, whether he was a college head coach, O or D coordinator, or whatever, the odds of Belichick like success seems extremely low regardless.psjordan wrote: And then, a sobering list of how the last 15 DC’s hired as HC’s have fared: http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/Past ... _bag011514

Hype? Considering the experience of Zimmer and Turner, it's hardly hype...especially after the #### the team has paraded through the last decade....The hype machine is really rolling for these coaches. Expectations are clearly sky high.

Absolutely. I'm still excited though.mondry wrote: It doesn't but I think if you look at ANYWAY a head coach is acquired, whether he was a college head coach, O or D coordinator, or whatever, the odds of Belichick like success seems extremely low regardless.

Re: Vikings Officially Hire Norv Turner as OC
I'm with you on this - well, to some degree. I'm not saying we can be a Superbowl team with the current talent, but I think we have superior talent to the Bears and the Lions, and they were in the playoff hunt until the last day (for the Bears).Webbfann wrote:I think expectations depend (in part) on whether you think most of our problems stem from poor talent or poor coaching. Those of us who think we have pretty good talent now and have suffered primarily from poor coaching are going to have higher expectations for a quick turnaround. Those who think that lack of talent has been our primary problem will have lower expectations for a quick turnaround. I'm in the former camp; I think a mere change of coaching to proven competent coaches will bring a quick turnaround. I think we have been underachieving.
I still think we're a QB away. I was thinking how much Brady would appreciate our offensive skill players, watching the game Sunday. Edelman is fine, but I'd rather have Jennings or Patterson if Brady was my QB. Not to mention a running threat of AD's abilities. And Kyle Rudolph could be the best tight end in the league with a HOF QB.
As for defensive talent, I would take Robison/Griffen/Allen over any of the other DE sets in our division. And Harrison Smith over any of the other safeties. And Rhodes is a stud. Good defensive coaching could make a huge difference in our linebacking corps - Greenway can still be solid, and Mauti and Cole have shown us hints that they can be starting material. ...if they are taught how to play the game.
Personally, I think this defense is a stud two-gap nose tackle away from respectability (mediocrity, averageness, etc). And with the talent on offense, we'd win a lot of games with a #16 defense.
