Everson has faded mid season each of his last few years with the vikings, and seems to have a chronic foot issue that crop up every season. Now he is two years older! Limiting his use is probably the best bet to get some value out of him.VikingLord wrote: ↑Wed Aug 25, 2021 5:59 pmI'm surprised that Weatherly hasn't looked better than he has so far. I have my doubts that Weatherly will go from starter to cut. Here's the latest from Mike zimmer.
Mike Zimmer said Everson Griffen would join the Vikings as a situational player. Said they talked with Griffen for quite a while and felt like he’s in a good place. But Zimmer said either Weatherly or Wonnum will be the starter.
I wonder if Zimmer gives Griffen a chance to win the starting job outright. I know he's a bit up there in years now and maybe can't get it done in a starting role for an entire season, but if he looks like he can do it I'd be really tempted to give him that chance.
I don't know if Weatherly ends up cut in that scenario, but for what they're paying him I'd say it would be likely he will be.

I think at this point in his career it's the only way to go. He should stay fresh and expect that he can still rush the QB. He seems like a good guy and always played hard. Yes he did some tweets and other stuff but that's part of today's world. I think it's a good signing. He certainly can help the young guys. Hopefully his mental status stays in check. He wants the chance and he respects Zim. Pass rush is always key against these QBs. He showed last year he can still do that part. It's worth the risk. This will help Hunter out also. Makes it hard when there is more than one guy to worry about. Nothing to lose at this point.fiestavike wrote: ↑Thu Aug 26, 2021 9:58 amEverson has faded mid season each of his last few years with the vikings, and seems to have a chronic foot issue that crop up every season. The tweets don't really bother me. Kirk is ####. It's not like everyone didn't know it, especially the people on his own team. He'll do what he can do and we'll hope for the best.

Kirk is a very good QB. There is nothing #### about him. Everson's comments were a manifestation of his mental illness.fiestavike wrote: ↑Thu Aug 26, 2021 5:42 pmCharVike wrote: ↑Thu Aug 26, 2021 1:11 pm

For what the Vikes spent to get him I think they had the same opinion.

When you put it that way, if the Vikings do end up with Griffen as the starting DE opposite Hunter they're probably in for a long season.fiestavike wrote: ↑Thu Aug 26, 2021 9:58 am Everson has faded mid season each of his last few years with the vikings, and seems to have a chronic foot issue that crop up every season. I think they will go with Wonnum and release Weatherly at this point. Wonnum hasn't looked great either but he's cheaper and he's younger.

Re: Vikings working out Everson Griffen
We’re in for a long season if Griff is the other DE?? Not sure how you came up with that logic but I can tell you that Wonnum is a lot less explosive than Griff is even at the age he’s at. I’d honestly take Jones’ pass rushing get off over Wonnums. Griff had 6 sacks on two different teams that used him as a situational rusher. He exploded for a sack tonight. The guy can still get to the passer.VikingLord wrote: ↑Thu Aug 26, 2021 7:36 pmWhen you put it that way, if the Vikings do end up with Griffen as the starting DE opposite Hunter they're probably in for a long season.fiestavike wrote: ↑Thu Aug 26, 2021 9:58 am Everson has faded mid season each of his last few years with the vikings, and seems to have a chronic foot issue that crop up every season. It’s no different than relying on B-Rob as a starting DE a few years back. We weren’t in for a “long year” because Robison was our starting DE. He was still very solid as a pass rusher. And even if Griff is below average against the run, it’s not going to matter when you have 3 out of 4 defensive lineman that are legitimately elite against the run in hunter, Pierce and Tomlinson. And a backer like Kendricks.
Sorry but saying we’re in for a long year because of that is asinine

I want to be clear - I am not questioning Griffen's talent or ability to get after the passer or even defend the run.Pondering Her Percy wrote: ↑Fri Aug 27, 2021 10:30 pmWe’re in for a long season if Griff is the other DE?? I'm more concerned about his ability to hold up and play at a high level for an entire season, which is something he has struggled with the last few seasons.
If Griffen wins the starting job or the Vikings have to rely on him in that role I don't think they can reasonably expect him to play out the season in that role. I'd rather see them use him situationally and save him for the playoffs when they can let him loose.

Last night you saw what a starting quality DE should do against backups in a preseason game.
Huge difference between him and Weatherly.

I honestly think they plan on using him situationally. But even if he was to miss a couple games, I don’t think that turns into us having a long rough seasonVikingLord wrote: ↑Fri Aug 27, 2021 10:48 pmI want to be clear - I am not questioning Griffen's talent or ability to get after the passer or even defend the run.Pondering Her Percy wrote: ↑Fri Aug 27, 2021 10:30 pm

You're probably right. I think I over reacted a bit due to the bitter after taste of last year's total lack of QB pressure and my fear that will repeat itself, no matter how irrational that fear may be.Pondering Her Percy wrote: ↑Sat Aug 28, 2021 10:14 pmI honestly think they plan on using him situationally. I am happy they got Griff back. This seems like the right place for him and he can still play at a high level.

Vikings are going to bring him back
But because the NFL carried over a rule it established in 2020, allowing teams to keep veterans on their 16-player practice squads, Griffen could return to the team if he clears waivers on Wednesday. League sources said on Tuesday evening they expected the Vikings would bring Griffen back after he went through waivers.

I could easily see Griffen not clearing waivers. His contract is so team friendly another team might take a chance on him.RandyMoss84 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 5:23 pmVikings are going to bring him back
