Based on the last years cap hits for the top 5 slots where we will be picking roughly $5,100,000. Thats our 2 firsts, second, third, two forths. A fifth and sixth round pick in our range will combine for about $800k, not sure if we have an extra fifth or sixth.

Unfortunately, they haven't taken into account the draft picks that the Vikings received in the Harvin trade. That #25 pick will coast another $1.4M and the 7th round, 25th pick would be another $400K. That would put the Vikings right around $7.2M if they use all 11 draft picks.

These numbers make it a little clearer as to why the Vikes had to let Winfield "go" after he refused to renegotiate his contract. A whole lot of people complained about it and said what is the big deal, the Vikings have plenty of cap room blah, blah, blah. Now it is clear.

But only the 51 biggest contracts are taken into account against the cap,
so if they use all 11 draft picks, you have to remove 11 contracts from that number.

If it's only minimum contracts (~400 K), it still is about 4.5 M, so your rookies
gonna cost 7.2 M, but count less than 3M against the cap... I think...

The top 51 is only relevant during the offseason before the roster size gets cut down to 53. Based on our current roster, all of our top 5 draft picks will be in the top 51, and based off last years numbers will account for about $5.1 million. I just figured our top 5 picks because those are the only real locks to make the team.

Yes, for the season, every contrats will count against the cap, including injuries list and practice squad.

What I meant to say was, every time you sign somebody to a "big" contract, a "small" contract disappear,
because of the "51 rule" now, and, for the season, because the player won't make the final roster.

In fact I just assumed that all the players who will be cut just before the season starts
don't count against the cap, but in fact I have no idea of how it works...
I just thought that, the maximum roster being 80 players, 27 players will be cut,
so it would be about 11 M, it wouldn't work...

Anyway, as long as Spielmann understand the rule...

Just read that Frazier is trying to work out a package to bring back Winfield. I'd say good luck with that, but the free agent market may not snap him up as fast as his agent thinks it will. 'Toine came off a great year, but undersized 35 year old defensive backs with an injury history aren't usually the ones teams are going to throw big bucks at. Not even the Vikings bite on those very often. But the Vikings organization and fans know what Winfield brings, and he solidifies a very young backfield with a coach's savvy. I think that makes him way more valuable to the Vikings than a team like the Browns or Colts.

That technically counts as a free agent move, though.

The CB market was deep this off season. When he got released he was rated on nfl.com as the 3rd or 4th best CB avaliable ... and that was after 1-2 had already been signed.

If they get him back I just hope they're not bringing back a discontented player. Otherwise it would be great to have him back. His leadership is valuable.

Along with his loyalty and commitment, Antoine has been more than a player for us over the years. He's a role model, a true leader and someone that warrants the greatest treatment.

Obviously football's a harsh game and you can't let sentiment rule and force paying ludicrous amounts but if he's willing to settle for a fair amount, from both perspectives, we should go all out to ensure he's back in purple next season IMO.

I would much rather stick with one of our own, continue to milk his experience than opt to bring in an ex-Packer, probably looking for a fair pay day in Woodson.

Agreed, and theres always the possibility of Woodson not constantly getting away with pass interference if he was a Viking.

I haven't had time to follow much the last couple of days... has Winfield signed anywhere?
