A successful coach needs a patient wife, loyal dog, and great quarterback - and not necessarily in that order.

BTW- I think any new coaching staff that feels the need to hitch its wagon to a newly drafted QB despite there being none worth drafting won't last long either.

Who says there are none worth drafting and who could possibly even know that?

Historically, Spielman and the Vikings appear to be deathly afraid of 3rd round draft picks. Perhaps for good reason. Over the past six drafts they've only had two - Asher Allen and Josh Robinson.

I see them selecting a non-QB with the #8 pick and then Spielman just won't be able to help himself. He'll trade their high 2nd round pick and one of the 3rd round picks to move up into the bottom of the 1st round and take a QB (who he'll claim wouldn't have be there at #40).

I don't think it's the third round fear; I think
It's them climbing back into late first round
for Patterson and such

Thnx, now I know. Still a stupid acronym, though.
At least he earned it...unlike Jimmy the Tortoise, who Paul Allen started calling "Jimmy Football" after falling in love with him...

My intent was not to imply that there are no QBs worth taking in this draft.

My intent was to dispute the notion that the new coaching regime MUST "hitch its wagons" to a new QB, which to me implies that the coaching staff will be fired if the QB to whom they hitch their wagons fails.

I'd prefer they draft BPA style, instead of forcing a QB pick. If that leads to a QB being drafted, so be it. Then have a open competition for the starting QB position, pick the best to be the starter, and move on to the next guy if the first guy fails.

No wagon hitching necessary.

Hitching wagons to players is partially to blame for getting he last coaching staff fired.

I see where you're coming from and I appreciate the clarification. Thanks.

This is not the draft for a QB. It is however a draft for DEFENSE! and OL.

Because a week before the super bowl there are stories about Bortles being the #1 QB taken.

Even the mock draft experts usually have some clue when it comes to "can't miss" guys like Luck and Cam. They can hardly agree on the top 1 this year, much less ranking the top 5.

I don't recall Newton being a consensus #1 until much closer to the draft.

Even in 2011 the QB's wearnt so up and down, other then Luck. Now JFB, Bortles and Carr have all been predicted to go before Teddy. Teddy is the only QB I would see us, at this point, taking at #8.

McShay: We were surprised by Barr's 2013 tape

Scouts Inc.'s Todd McShay admits he was surprised, in a negative way, after watching UCLA senior edge rusher Anthony Barr's 2013 tape.

"We didn't see as much explosiveness as we'd expected," McShay writes. "We'll continue to update his evaluation as we study him further." This is something we have noted for weeks and one reason why our own Josh Norris has ranked Khalil Mack over Barr. The Bruin has great burst and closing speed, but he struggles with hand use once his initial line and momentum are stopped. McShay dropped Barr from No. 3 to No. 6.
