Maybe the identity of the person being quoted needs to be confirmed to an editor or something?

These days, some of the info we get about this stuff isn't from genuine news organizations so it all has to be taken with a reasonable dose of skepticism. I think that's healthy anyway...
Sorry I haven't responded sooner ... I was away for a few days with no wifi available.

Quoting someone with their opinion of what happens should be contextual. As in, the reporter would layout what has transpired and then quote that person. Depending on who that person is (deemed a reliable source) they may use him as an unnamed source. Someone close to the situation may not want to use their name because in fear of retribution ... That's normally the only way a source is granted that protection. For a sports report, it's common that the editor would know the source.

Of course, sports isnt in the realm of "national security" so I know many cases where something wasn't printed because the source didn't want their name in the paper.

It's gets really shady with "analysts" and such going off and writing whatever they want because it's "just their opinion" and bloggers who have no idea what standards serious news stories should be held to. It's like the tail wagging the dog now more than ever.

But, even without the bloggers and the citizen journalists out there, I remain skeptical until something actually happens. I completely agree with you --- it is healthy.

ESPN's Adam Schefter "doesn't see" the Vikings trading Percy Harvin.

Schefter is just passing along his gut feeling in a mailbag column, but his gut feeling is surely informed by league chatter. Schefter believes the Vikings would be "out of their minds" to trade Harvin for less than "premium value." Most reports have suggested premium value is something the Vikings will have trouble getting for a player who wants to break the bank with his next contract.

I share the same same sentiment. I have felt, and still feel, that Harvin will not be going anywhere, no matter how much the media wants to suggest otherwise.

That's not a very forward-thinking position. For a team intent on building through the draft, they could be letting him go without realizing the multiple draft picks that he'd garner in a trade today.

Minnesota Vikings won't shop Percy Harvin, GM says
"As I stated earlier, we have no intent to trade (him)," Spielman told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine. "Anything related to his contract or any discussions will all be kept internally. I think everybody understands what type of player Percy Harvin is. He's a dynamic playmaker, not only on offense (and) the things that he can do with different positions, but also what he brings us as a kickoff returner."

It's a cost-benefit exercise and really depends on if he's viewed in the long-term plans or not. My guess is the Vikings would LOVE to have Percy A) locked up for the long haul and B) happy. If they are convinced he cannot co-exist, it makes sense trading him while you can. Of course, going that route you have to look at compensation. Would you take, say, a third-and a fourth-rounder now and wash your hands of the situation thankful you were able to get anything? You'd be getting considerably less than full value. Does that payment make up for what he could've done on the field had you let him play out his contract then slap on the franchise tag and do it for another year while you try to make amends and work out an extension then?

The bottom line is it's a complex situation with a lot of variables and unknowns, particularly to fans but probably to everybody not named Percy Harvin. Unless you get a first-rounder in return people are going to think you've made the wrong decision and there's no teling if that's the case for several years until you see how those draft picks ended up (compared to Percy's career elsewhere). Trade him away for peanuts and you got hoodwinked. Let him leave as an UFA and you should've made a trade when you could to get SOMETHING. Unhappily keep him and you risk him holding out 10 games and being a distraction.

Best-case scenario still remains to sign him to an extension that either pleases everyone or one that displeases everyone equally. Any other move is going to be scrutinized and criticized for years to come as Vikings fans wonder "what if" and say "We should've done...." in hindsight.

It's an annoying debacle with little clarity, great speculation and more paths to frustration than mutually-beneficial resolution.

Locker room cancer coach attacking head case aside, do you really want to invest the kind of money he's expecting on a guy with durability concerns? And franchise tag a guy who's already reportedly requested a trade with two years left, is going to reportedly sit out with 1 year left, and you tag him? As if he wasn't already brewing in his own filth for the last three years?

3rd and 4th? Good riddance. We can win without him. Coaches don't need to be undermined during a rebuild. And no way as good as he is on the field, do you invest the money he wants in a slot receiving scat back who misses practices regularly and is banged up week in and week out.

Is it that hard to sign Percy to a 5 year, 55.5 million dollar deal with 30 million guaranteed? He's what ,24/25 that not a bad deal for a 24/25 year old player. But, the attitude problems are what gives many posters pause...

Harvin has an attitude, there is no denying that. However, many of his recent issues have involved money. He obviously wants a new contract and he is not in a contract year. So from his perspective, what things can he do to make that happen sooner rather than later? My guess is at least part of his antics are to motivate the passage of an extension. He really doesn't have much leverage aside from the media rumors we are seeing, so I think at least in part, that is why we are seeing the rumor mill.

Percy Harvin - WR - Vikings

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier doesn't expect Percy Harvin to hold out, and believes they have a "good relationship."

The Vikings are putting a brave face on the Harvin situation at the Combine, insisting they have no plans to trade him and that everything is hunky dory. Various reports have suggested Harvin is planning to hold out and seek the moon in a new deal, while he reportedly unleashed an "embarrassing" tirade on Frazier during the season. Those are all reasons Harvin may eventually be traded, but a move doesn't appear imminent.

I think Harvin may think he's bigger than the team. I think he also probably has an anger management issue. I think there's a difference between being passionate and just having anger management issues and a complete disregard to leadership. It's been reported that he threw a weight at Childress. Had that hit him and injured him seriously we wouldn't be having this issue because he probably would've been charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

Look, he's not the first WR or football player to act the way that he does and he definitely won't be the last. The question becomes do you build a franchise around that type of player. There's no denying his talent, that's obvious. I think the Vikings need to get him into some anger management classes and help him work through his issues rather than trading him, but I also think if they believe he could cause more harm to the team than he will good, then trade him and get fair value in return.

I honestly think it was just media hype now with the trade rumors.
Same thing I said. The ONLY reason this situation even came about was becasue the media was reaching in the first place. And it all came from Percy not being included on a damn poster. The media took that and ran with it. There was only one guy (that I've never heard of) who said he had a "source" that told him the Vikings were actively pursuing a trade of Percy. Then fans of every other team started dreaming up trade scenarios that fed into the hysteria. I think it was all hype.

Vikes GM: We won't deal Percy Harvin
Six days after initially telling local reporters exactly that, Spielman came to the NFL's annual scouting combine and was asked to address the situation again. He hasn't budged.

Spielman says he has no intent to deal the receiver he calls a "dynamic playmaker," and won't even take phone calls about it. He intends to keep all information about contract negotiations internal, too, as he describes.

The only part that surprises me a little is the "won't even take phone calls about it" stance. I can't decide if that's true and a strong vote of confidence, a lie to posture and/or send a message to Harvin or being a negligent GM. If I was him, I wouldn't have made that bold of a statement. You can make a "Not for sale" stance while at least doing your due diligence and seeing what people are offering. It doesn't hurt to LISTEN, particularly if Harvin absolutely cannot co-exist. I suppose it does send a message that the team is committed to trying to make the relationship work. At least, for the moment.
