Just keep the purple goggles on, Zimmer and Norv can make anything work, Rickie has a plan, I mean he's signed all those ST guys right? But you are kidding yourself if you think Melton or Munnerlyn will come here if another team offers close to the same money. Who wants to play in a college stadium, outside, in MN, for 2 years. With Cassel as QB and Ponder as a backup. Forgive me if im a little pessimistic. At least they got Johnson though.

Well we've already signed one of them and last I heard, Melton is still there. I must be kidding myself though right? And the thing is, Munnerlyn cancelled the rest of his visits so he didn't even give other teams a chance to offer him more money.

Like I said in my original post that addressed this^, this has very little to do with a players decision and that was proven today so you can throw that "philosophy" out the door pal.

Actually, if you watch this video, Munnerlyn explains why he decided to come here. We all know money is a big reason but also, he mentions the coaching staff, our defensive line and how we signed Joseph, the scheme and how he fit into it. I didn't hear him mention anything to do with the college stadium, playing outdoors, who our QBs were, etc. Just sayin...

I don't get the Sproles lust. He's a scat back on the wrong side of 30. Ya he's talented and would add another dimension to the offense but it's not incredibly difficult to find guys with his skill set. I would rather have the 5th round pick.

Yes there will be similar style RBs in the 5th that Norv Turner could make into the next Sproles if he really wanted to. De'Anthony Thomas comes to mind.

I think Zimmer will have that kind of pull for years to come. He's a respectable coach around the league and a lot of players will want to play for him, especially if the Vikings improve this season.

I wanted him as a free agent for a bargain, but the people wanting him for a 5th round pick are nuts. Just use that 5th round pick on DeAnthony Thomas, Dri Archer, or James White just to name a few. hard to tell where these guys will go in the draft but i can see them being there in the 5th because of there size. DeAnthony Thomas averaged a touchdown every 9 plays and has played receiver before at oregon.

The Vikes do not need to give up a 5th round pick and additional salary for a 31 year old scat back/punt returner when they have AD and the second leading punt returner in the league. Yeah I know that he catches passes out of the backfield, something that AD will be doing more of with Turner's offense.

I'm glad we didn't trade for Darren Sproles. We can find a scat back anywhere, especially a younger one. Whoever we get will barely see the floor because Peterson will be taking most of the snaps anyway.
One thing i wanted to point out that I've been Noticing so far in free agency is how the Mike Zimmer hire has helped change my view of Rick Spielman. I think he is finally changing some of his hard headed ways as a GM. I think before he would make hires/signings of unknown or lesser known players/coaches to make himself look smart for finding a diamond in the rough and he viewed himself on a higher level than the coaches since they were "his" guys and didn't really take their opinion into account. I think with the Zimmer signing he realised his Job is on the line so he had to put his ego aside and sign Zimmer who is obviously his own man and not one of "his" guys. I think this helped free agency because Zimmer will stand up for what he thinks and not be rolled over by Spielmans ideas. I also attribute this to an extent to why the team is going after more established young players with upside and less diamond in the rough/discount "spielman guys". Just some food for thought.

You may be on to something, but I dunno. I think what we're seeing is a coach and GM being on the same page and working together. I'm not sure if Spielman is all that different, but I think Zimmer is definitely better than Frazier in "knowing what he wants" and relaying that into the signings. There's no way to tell, for all we know, Frazier was highly involved in "recommending" the Fred Evans, Marvin Mitchells, Erin Hendersons, and Jamarca Sanfords etc. There's a good chance Frazier was pretty happy / comfortable going into the season with what he had and played a big part in us keeping those players.
