Where does this rank him in the list of highest paid QBs?

49ers signed QB Colin Kaepernick to a six-year, $126 million contract extension through 2020.
It includes $61 million guaranteed. Bay Area Sports Guy had it first before NFL Network's Ian Rapoport confirmed the money portion. Kaepernick gets $21 million annually in new money and sets the new quarterback record for guaranteed money, surpassing Peyton Manning by $3 million and Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler by $7 million. The former second-round pick was entering the final year of his rookie deal. The 49ers have been one of the most run-heavy teams in recent years. After the addition of Stevie Johnson, Michael Crabtree's return to 100 percent health, and Frank Gore's age, we expect coach Jim Harbaugh to open up the offense more in 2014. Kaepernick is currently Rotoworld's No. 13 quarterback heading into the season, but a top-six finish isn't out of the question. He's primed to explode.

In terms of average yearly salary over the life of the contract, he's something like the 2nd highest paid player in the NFL now: $126M for 6 years, or $21 million per year. Aaron Rodgers $110M contract extension over 5 years works out to $22 million per year. Matt Ryan is right up there, too, at close to $21M per year.
I believe Kaepernick's $61M guaranteed is the highest.

Wow.... Do you guys honestly think he is worth being paid THAT much? I mean he deserves bigger contract but 61 mill guaranteed???? Idk....but atleast that locks him in with the team for a while. If a paid a QB that much he had better lead us to a super bowl before that guaranteed money is paid up.

No, but if they want to overpay him, who cares? Better for their competitors.

That contract is #### crazy. I can't blame the 49ers for wanting to lock him down but damn, that is ridiculous for a guy who is that young and unproven. NFL QBs are going to start getting paid like elite MLB pitchers, 25+ million a year.

No, not at all.
But I also read somewhere that Alex Smith thinks he's worth like 18 million a year. lol. I actually LIKE Alex Smith, but seriously dude? Seriously? These people have lost it.

There's also something to be said about saying that in public and using that as a starting point during negotiations. You probably make more at the end than if you said you think you're worth $12 million/year.

You think? Sounds like the Chiefs don't want to go over 15 million. I think Smith should be happy with that, because I think even
that is pretty generous.

Murray will be a better QB than Smith ever was. If he ever gets a chance. Book it Danno! Reid knows his QBs.
Let Smith play out his deal, work with Murray, and if Smith wants 18, 15, or maybe even 12, let him walk!

I think this will cause other QBs who are actually better than Kaepernick to negotiate bigger contracts too. Just like Richard Sherman. He's a beast to and is a proven corner but I don't know if I would spend that much on a corner back.

...the Niners can cut Kaepernick before April 1 of each year without owing any more money. There is also a de-escalator in the deal that can only be halted if Kaepernick takes the team to the Super Bowl or he is named first- or second-team All-Pro. A source tells Pro Football Talk that San Francisco is "thrilled" with the deal.
