Honestly, I'd be happy with any of those guys as a backup. None are great, but I don't see a significant drop off from Cassell and the price will be much lower. Plus, we got draft picks.
It would be interesting to see Hill return to Minnesota.

The 7th is for 2016.

I don't think Hoyer fits.
I don't like Whitehurst.
Can someone post a list? My phone is only half smart....
Off the top of my head Campbell is my preference. He'd be a good guy to provide some mentorship also.

Hill is another guy I like for a backup.

I love this trade. Having a reliable veteran backup QB is nice, but it's not as important for the Vikings as it is for teams that are ready to compete for the Super Bowl. If Brady, Rodgers, Luck, etc have to miss a few games, a quality backup might be the difference between 12-4 and 10-6. For the vikings, if Teddy misses a few games, and we now have Whitehurst, or Sanchez, or whoever, instead of Cassel, we probably go 5-11 instead of 6-10 or 7-9.
Even if Teddy plays all year, our ceiling for this year isn't that high, 10-6 would be pretty optimistic, with 9-7 or 8-8 more realistic. Now say Teddy misses extensive time. With Cassel we probably go 7-9 or 6-10. With a random backup, we probably go 5-11 or 4-12. So if Teddy gets hurt, we're pretty screwed regardless, which is why I like trading Cassel and getting something for him, even if it means we're thin at backup QB, a position that will only be used if we're already in big trouble, as in Teddy being hurt.
The teams that need a guy like Cassel or teams like the Bills, or teams like the Patriots. In the Bills case, he has a chance to start. In the Pats case, he would be on a team good enough to win a game or two if he had to start for them, and he would give them a better chance than an inferior backup. Obviously if Brady goes down, the Pats are in trouble, but if he suffers, say, a two week injury, the pats have a chance to win those games with Cassel, whereas their chances are worse with a developmental type guy filling in for Brady.
I feel our chances of winning games without our starter are sufficiently low regardless of our backup, which means it's not worth investing much money in one. I read an article about a year ago that made a case for always going with a developmental guy as a backup, because chances are a team was screwed if their starter got hurt. While that is true if the starter is elite and misses extensive time, in didn't account for the times when an elite starter misses a game or two, and a serviceable backup fills in and wins a game that a developmental guy wouldn't have won.

I am with you HVF. Cassel would be a better backup than the FA options out there. Maybe Sanchez but he isn't coming here with Teddy set as the starter.
