Our acquisitions so far are allowing Speilman to trade back and accumulate additional picks.......for next year maybe? And we still could get a very good corner or maybe even Ha Ha Clinton Dix. Would also like to see a high draft pick on a guard.

I just heard that on the radio. Wow, it seems like a cheap price for such a proven, productive player.

Has there been any news on Darryl Smith? Seems like the FA linebackers have yet to see any love other than Dansby & the vikes could sure use a proven commodity there heading into the draft, especially since it looks like we missed the initial run on secondary help.

We lose Toby, but cant swing Sproles fr a 5th rd pick? And no CBs at all yet? And none even wanted to sign here? Same ole same ole. Guess we will have to prove ourselves with the draft picks and the Dean's and Jaspers of the world.

Absolutely love Sproles but I don't love the idea of a 5th round pick on a scat back who's 31 years old. Unfortunately, RBs and guys like him you can land cheap in the draft. Shane Vereen from NE comes to mind.

Munnerlyn is visiting today. Signing him would be a great pickup

RB's seem to be really undervalued in this year's draft, and I think the Vikes are comfortable with Asiata as a backup. I wouldn't be surprised if we nab an RB in a late round this year.

I think Munnerlyn is a lock to sign today. And with that said Vikes will be done in 2014 FA (outside of 1-2 small depth signings, mostly their own FA's).

Rick will be trading in this draft to accumulate picks. He will trade down from 8th, and also trade back up, at minimum with Pats at 29...end result will be 2 first round picks plus still a 2nd and 3rd. Walking away from draft with 2 defensive picks (LB and CB), project QB, and future OL.

Don't know why Greenway hasn't been asked to take pay cut...

He probably has, but he has a lot of leverage. No reason to take one, really, if the Vikings aren't serious about cutting him, which they shouldn't given the lack of any real options behind him.

Damn. I wish this team would try for Antoino Cromartie. I still think the guy is an elite cover corner.

I will be curious to see what happens with Munnerlyn and Melton today.

Some "fans" are just so impatient. Do you want to be the Miami's and Washington's of the NFL and piss all your money down the drain and still not get anywhere? Yeah thats worked out in the past.

And where are you coming up with "none wanted to sign here"?? We have a dual threat in Munnerlyn currently on a visit along with Melton. If we land both of them are you honestly going to sit there and complain? Even if we just got Munnerlyn.

Also, what does Larry Dean have to do with anything? He's been nothing but a special teamer and won't ever see the field on defense. As for Brinkley, just because he started here under the clueless Frazier doesn't mean it's the same with Zimmer. This isn't going to be the same Vikings of old. We have 50 times the coaching staff than we had last year. That makes a much bigger difference than you think.

I'm not sure why people seem so concerned about it. There are posts about it all the time. I suppose getting him to take a paycut could create room for one more free agent signing but I also don't think it's fair to expect players to take a pay cut as soon as the quality of their pay dips. The team agrees to the contracts, just like the players do, and they're not fully guaranteed. The price a team ends up paying in the latter stages of a contract is part of the cost to have that player in the early years of the deal. In that sense, it could be argued that a player like Greenway might be getting overpaid for his current level of play but what he's making now is partially payment for what he's already done. In other words, it's part of the cost of keeping him around after his first contract in the first place.

If the team doesn't want to pay a veteran in decline, they have can try to renegotiate but as you said above, Greenway has leverage in this situation and little, if any, incentive to take a pay cut. If the Vikes don't want to pay him what they owe him, they have the option to cut him.

I think it's possible we'll see a renaissance from Greenway over the next few years if they add a top LB in the draft and if the moves they're making on the DL pan out. Put some more talent around him, take a little pressure off of him, and he may thrive in Zimmer's defense.

Nice post, Jim.

It seems to me, judging from the signings and current FAs that are visiting, that Zim & Spielman have a vision for this D and they are making some significant moves that will radically change what was a poor unit last year. It is a fluid process of filling holes, essentially, shedding old skin, retaining and acquiring talent. They seem to be striving to limit the number of (gaping) holes that we have before heading into the draft. Fun to watch!

Just keep the purple goggles on, Zimmer and Norv can make anything work, Rickie has a plan, I mean he's signed all those ST guys right? But you are kidding yourself if you think Melton or Munnerlyn will come here if another team offers close to the same money. Who wants to play in a college stadium, outside, in MN, for 2 years. With Cassel as QB and Ponder as a backup. Forgive me if im a little pessimistic. At least they got Johnson though.
