I think Floyd would take a back seat to Melton. Melton was a star two seasons ago and hurt his ACL last year. But it never hurts to have more talent in the trenches. Floyd rotating in is fine, and a great D Line makes up for deficient play in the back end.

Yeah, I heard that on the NFL network a bit ago. That would appear to be a pretty mean rotation, at least on paper at the DT position. If we do sign him, I would pretty much kiss any chances of signing Williams back goodbye.

Melton is one of the best 3 techniques in the league, IMO, provided he is healthy.

Wow. If we signed Melton... What a defensive line we would have.
This is just purely hypothetical, so bare with me, but, what if we signed Melton, then played Shariff at LDE, Robison at RE, Everson Griffen at OLB, while Joseph and Melton played the two tackle spots? That would be one interesting hybrid defense right there.
OR (again, just bare with me) by signing Melton, we could run a 3-4 scheme during a game (not as a full time defense). Melton and Sharrif at ends, Joesph at nose, Griffen and Robison at OLB.
I am all on board if this team wants Melton. I am just shocked that we are actually considering bringing him in.

I understand we need depth at defensive tackle but unless Melton is coming in at a significantly cheaper price than what he was paid last year this is completely unnecessary. We have a huge need at cornerback and linebacker and they want to bring in a rotational Defensive tackle coming off an ACL tear, who was paid $8 million last year? I trust Zimmer has a plan and knows what he is doing, but at the same time i think he may be over-valuing his ability to get more out of our corners by coaching and scheme, not to mention all of our corners are relatively young and there is no veteran leader among them.

Well his price is going to drop significantly because of his ACL and I'm sure Zimmer and Spielman aren't stupid, they know where our needs are. It's the 2nd day of free agency. Relax

I'd be very surprised if Melton was a "rotational defensive tackle." It's also about who's available and what their price is (and desire to come to Minnesota). It sounds like the Vikings have had interest in various corners and linebackers. I, for one, am kind of laughing at the deal the Packers gave Shields. They overpaid what the market is panning out to be, which makes pretty happy. I doubt the Vikings are done in free agency, but their space might be depleted quite a bit if they end up giving Melton a solid multi-year contract.

There's where the big question is. It also worries me that he has drawn no interest outside of Dallas.

Why? Floyd was Mr close last year. And close doesn't cut it in the NFL. He is not NFL ready. I believe he may have been a god pick ( I know I am one of the few who don't think Rickie is a great GM), but if Melton is healthy and we land him, we should have the best Dline in the NFC. Maybe a slight exaggeration, but im usually mr pessimistic.

What corners do you think they are still really looking at? Honestly, I think Rickie is targeting a corner as a high pick and starting him, now that we have an awesome NT, and a QB that can play the 2 years we are outdoors. Unless Teddy drops in our laps.

Mr. Close?? Like I've said before, with the limited time he had, he produced so where you're coming up with that is beyond me. Not NFL ready?? What he did this past year trumps that statement.

Maybe they're in love with Gilbert

Could this meeting (Melton) have been "Plan B" in lieu of not signing Joseph and was set up days ago? Of course since he is coming in might as well shoot him an offer and see if it sticks.
The braintrust is at Alabama's Pro Day today.

Melton and Joseph play different positions. Melton is a 3-technique, Joseph a 1-technique.
I think it's more of an opportunity to get a high caliber player for a low cost. Melton would probably be a short term, prove it contract because of the injury. He and Floyd would likely rotate and then depending on how they feel about Floyd's progression they could let Melton walk or they could sign him to an extension. That's my guess anyway
