Pettine has had success. I like that they are bringing in an assistant HC with a defensive background. Our new HC is offensive minded but he knows the other side means something also.40for60 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 11:31 am Vikings name 9 assistant coaches. Mike Pettine is the assistant HC.

Did we go overboard with the "Assistant" titles?
I'm as optimistic as the next guy but it would be nice to know we are hiring guys that are somewhat wanted elsewhere.
Open mind and all that, "until they prove otherwise" and all that, but sheesh it seems we are counting on a lot of coaches to "gel together and turn their careers around". Oh well, I have my popcorn ready.

Well last year we hired Kube as OC. How did that turn out. That was the young gun. The gun had no bullets. The NFL is recycled coach over and over and that continues until they quite. This goes on every year. Recycle job. The only new guys are in college. That don't always work either.VikingsVictorious wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 1:00 pmpsjordan wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 12:16 pm

What specifically didn't you like about Kubes play calling?CharVike wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 1:12 pmWell last year we hired Kube as OC. How did that turn out. That was the young gun. Everything. But as I posted Kube is set for life. He's back in Denver polishing balls. No team will hire him as an OC. He's not qualified for that job. He was a yes man to Zim. Nothing beyond that.StumpHunter wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 1:58 pmWhat specifically didn't you like about Kubes play calling?CharVike wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 1:12 pm

O'Connell says he will be calling the offensive plays during his press conference today.

How will he ever know how to do that if he didn't do it in LA......?

i'm ready for a beer.
Re: Kevin O'Connell will be next Vikings coach
I've heard Wesley Phillips as OC, but he wasn't listed on the Vikings.com article today about new coaches so it is always interesting when the OC/DCs aren't responsible for play calling. O'Connell called the plays for 11 games in Washington, so it won't be his first time even if he didn't do it in LAvikeinmontana wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 5:24 pmHow will he ever know how to do that if he didn't do it in LA......?![]()

Re: Kevin O'Connell will be next Vikings coach
It was tongue in cheek. People tend to put too much emphasis on who's calling plays on gameday. It's all coaches preference. Some prefer being in control of that specific part of the game. Others prefer being more available to deal with all of the other aspects as well as adding input to playcalling. No right or wrong way as far as I know.Crax wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 5:27 pmI've heard Wesley Phillips as OC, but he wasn't listed on the Vikings.com article today about new coaches so it is always interesting when the OC/DCs aren't responsible for play calling. Did he impress everybody at his press conference?
Re: Kevin O'Connell will be next Vikings coach
I was impressed, but it's so early and when the Vikings go on a losing streak, it will be interesting to see how he responds then.

He was likable. I'm in a wait and see mode but I am happy they hired an offensive guy and moved on from the previous regime. Interesting what he said about Studwell and other former Vikings. Also interesting that he commented on how he liked Barr and 3 man fronts. Going to be a lot of changes this off-season.

Good point. The Rams were a glamorous team known for McVay and Stafford and offense, but their defense was top shelf. In fact, I’d say it won them both the NFCC game and the Super Bowl.CharVike wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 12:26 pmPettine has had success. KOC is smart to hire experience on the defensive side of the ball.

Go ahead. I dare you.
Underestimate this man.
Re: Kevin O'Connell will be next Vikings coach
I was impressed by his energy. It is contagious and I think that will resonate with the players.VikingsVictorious wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 6:26 pm Did he impress everybody at his press conference?
I also liked that he mentioned all three phases of the game, and has a vision for the defensive side of the ball and seems excited about that as well as the offense. Zim didn't seem like he had any vision for the offense other than "run the ball more." I swear Zim would rather lose a game 13-10 than win a game 45-41. It was interesting that when asked about players on the defensive side of the ball KOC mentioned Barr, yet had no mention of Hunter. But that doesn't necessarily mean anything.
His first response when asked about if Cousins was going to be on the team this year was something along the lines of "Well, I know he is under contract for this year." Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but he did talk him up after that. But regardless he's not going to rip his QB that is currently on the team. Also Chris Tomasson asked Kwesi to comment on that as well. His answer was kind of strange. Paraphrasing it was something kind of like "What he said".
