So if I am reading the deal right, his cap number doesn't really change this year but next year the team can make back some of his money if he doesn't rush for a set amount of yards or make the playoffs. He in turn can make money if he rushes for 1900 yards and if they win the Superbowl.... Run for the money AD!

I look at this restructuring as a two year deal. In 2017 his cap number is $18M and could conceivable be $20M if he hits his high-end escalator for performance in the prior year. There's no way we're going to carry an $18M cap charge (or more) for a 32 year old RB. If he's still on the roster after the 2016 season we'll either restructure again or he will be released.

His cap charge this year is unchanged at $15.4M. The only thing that changes for this year is that his base salary is now fully guaranteed. That's sort of a moot point because as a vested vet his salary would be guaranteed anyway as long as he's on the roster for the opening week of the season. The Vikings didn't give up anything by guaranteeing his base salary this year.

In 2016 and 2017 we've shifted some base salary to a roster bonus that is payable on the 5th day of the league year ($5M in 2016 and $6M in 2017). So ... five days into free agency we need to make a decision to either keep him or release him. If we release him he gets the benefit of testing FA in the early stages which works to his advantage.

We can release Peterson in 2016 (before his roster bonus is due) and incur no dead money against our cap. Same thing for 2017.

I don't see the escalators and de-escalators as a big deal. He has to rush for 1750 yds AND the team has to win a playoff game for him to earn $1M. 1900 yds AND the team has to win the SB for him to earn $2M. That's tip money given how high the bar is set. I think there's a higher probability that the de-escalators kicks in than the escalators.

The Vikings won this negotiation by a wide margin. We get a motivated Peterson who should no longer be a malcontent and we really didn't give up much in return to achieve that.

I don't think it's a question of "winning". The parties reached a mutually beneficial agreement. Peterson received guaranteed money he wanted and the Vikes came away with a more favorably structured contract. I just wish they'd reached this deal months ago. It would have saved everyone some aggravation.

Teams can't allow players to control the team past a certain point. Zimmer kept his promise to Peterson, when
he showed up and played they got his deal reset.

It would have been nice to get some cap relief this year, so we could have front loaded some contracts but alas... least we will get 2 mil or a superbowl next year!
