I'm guessing they're looking at the Ponder pick to make that determination.

Norv likes guys w/ big arms. I think that may play a part of it too.

It probably does, as does their obvious need at/interest in the position.
As a prospect, he makes a lot of sense for them. As you said, Norv likes big-armed QBs. Carr needs some work but they signed Cassel so presumably, they won't need to thrust a rookie QB into a starting role. If they keep Ponder, they wouldn't necessarily have to put a rookie in as a backup either if they didn't feel he was ready.

I should add that I think the Vikings are either targeting an LB with that 8th pick or they're hoping to trade down, add picks and perhaps draft someone like Carr later in the first round. Spielman has already said he expects the Vikes to do some moving around in the draft and he's expressed interest in trading down. The big question there, of course, is whether he'll be able to find a team that wants to trade up into the #8 spot and negotiate a deal worth taking.

Do you think the Vikings will trade up in the 1st Round of the Draft?
I think there's too much depth in this draft to trade up from 8. However, trading back and stocking up a few picks may give more flexibility to jump back into the late 1st round to grab a player they have their eyes on (Van Noy, Shazier). It's been slick Rick's move the past few years.

I keep hearing expert change between JFB, Carr, and now Bortles. And even LB Mack (huge wast to us, we need good tackling/covering LBs, not pass rushing ones).

You keep making posts like the one above that imply mack is a one-dimensional player. I don't know how you got that impression but it's inaccurate. He's a terrific all-around linebacker. Mack's an excellent tackler and he can cover too. His ability to rush the passer gets emphasized in some draft discussions because he excelled in that area too but he's much more than just a pass rusher. He wouldn't be a waste for the Vikings. He might be just what they need.

Start the $1 rule. Won't change anything, but at least it will keep you entertained while you read the same thing over and over!

Good idea! From now on, I get $1 every time someone posts as if Mack is nothing more than a pass rusher. :)

Yes to both, but not at #8. They'll trade back into the bottom of the 1st and grab their QB.

That's where I'd put my money (which has increased drastically ever since Evans started bailing out JFB so often) . Seriously, though, I think this is the most likely scenario. I'd be fine w/ Carr, if that is the guy they want, as long as it's not at 8. I think he's worth a try late in the 1st.

Depends how the first rnd plays out and if they have one of those QB's graded high enough.

I think there's a good chance they take a Mosely in the 1st and have a QB plan for the 2nd and maybe take 2 CB's in the 3rd.
A successful coach needs a patient wife, loyal dog, and great quarterback - and not necessarily in that order.

If we can somehow get two first rounders we could potentially have something like 7 1st rounders under rookie deals? Pretty decent rebuilding strategy. Talk about restocked.

I believe adding two would give them eight. But is it a good stategy for rebuilding? Seems to me that rebuilding requires (by definition) a lot of new players, so giving up draft picks to move up and take a few stars would appear to run counter to that. And we've seen, using Adrian Peterson as a great example, what happens when you surround a small number of the very best players in the league with a bunch of scrubs. It doesn't work out very well.
