Paladins are for noobs.

Mages, be a warlock instead.

Shamans are alright at everything but excel at nothing. Be a Druid instead.

Hunters are pretty cool, too. Once you get to level 10 and can get a pet, it's like having your very own buddy to quest with. I've got a cat and he's great at taking care of the enemy whilst I fire away from a distance and don't (usually) take any damage. Having a combat pet is like having a group without having anyone to share loot with. :)

Only problem with pets (and again maybe they fixed this since I stopped playing) is you generally do not use them later in the game as they wander around and aggro monsters around your group when you don't want them to.

But I did play a Hunter for a while and agree it's a fun class, probably more suited for soloing than group stuff. If you're horde and want a cat, there's some unique ones you can find early on. One is a white cat (Echeyakee) you're supposed to kill in a quest but you can capture it instead. The other is a rare spawn, forget the name. Both in Crossroads.

I wouldn't know about that quite yet. I'm only level 34. But when I get bored playing Alliance, I'm going to try a Blood Elf hunter.

To start I've played wow for a long time now. Since early 05.

First choice is faction. Horde or Alliance. Both are good, Horde has the "ugly" races, but are sometimes more intresting (Undead) while the Alliance has the classic fantasy stars like humans and dwarves. Remember that race does not make or break your game. There is no bad combination, so feel free to create whatever you want.

For a first time player, i would recommend a warrior (go smash things) or mage (more pew pew) and finally the old stand by Hunter. The other classes are fine to start with, but usually require a bit more work to get what you want done. I would greatly suggest not playing a warlock or druid as your first class, some of their mechanics are strange and multiple forms add to the frustration.

Finding a good guild, one that has a solid adult player base with a friendly attitude is very helpful early on. Theres so much to talk about, and so much to say concerning this game that I couldnt fit it in one post. I currently have 3 80s and several 60+ toons so I can at least point you in the right direction if you have any questions.

@ A previous post that said hunter pets run loose, thats simply untrue. Put your pet on passive and micro manage it like you would a spell or other attack.

I play on Frostmane Horde side if anyone has any questions or want to chat in game. You can reach me by typeing /who and my chars name. Im in college so most of the time im not on during the day, i play evenings. If you do say something, just say your from the vikings forum.

I was talking specifically about end-game instances (ie. Molten Core and beyond). In all my times playing, pets were rarely if ever used in those situations.

They are used today in end game instances all the time. They account for ~10% of a hunters damage.

MC was over 2 years ago. The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King have come out since then, with completely different raids and compositions. If you have played since vanilla days a lot has changed.

That's good to hear, like I mentioned many times I quit before BC so things seem to have changed quite a bit.

Just curious, how are Shamans now? Are they still jack of all trades, master of none? They were my favorite class due to versatility but it was so frustrating watching other classes be better than them in every aspect. Hopefully now that they're not horde specific, they got some much needed attention.

Shaman are very good Elemental DPS, the one in my guild tops 4.5-5.5k dps in 25 mans. Resto is good, but Enh is garbage. They have good burst for about 3 GCDs then they taper off.

So overall, i think they have been buffed in the Elemental tree, and Resto tree, but need some work in Enhancement. Shaman are brought along not just for dps but for Bloodlust/Heroism. That little ability can make or break encounters.
