Ponder ran for a score and threw for another in the fourth quarter and San Francisco pulled away to beat the Denver Broncos 31-24 in the preseason Saturday night.

Sam Steele Ponder
Meanwhile, I'm at home finishing the paint job he abruptly abandoned 4 days ago.

We as Vikings fans say what we do of Ponder, but I have honestly been surprised at the lack of interest in him as a backup/3rd string quarterback. I'm glad he's back around.

On some of those throws he had 5 times the amount of time Teddy usually has per attempt, and he still only had a QB rating of 80ish. I'd seriously rather see Stave or Heinike play then Hill. But all 3 are really bad/inexperienced, and I dont think we can win a game with any of them. Why do they keep getting pure trash, instead of forking up some money for a real backup, and then a promising young 3rd string QB? We have been burned by it, as have so many teams, like the Cowboys last year, you would think they could get something better. They aernt afraid to waste money on other players/positions. Oh, and Locke sucks!
Not sure what other players they're "wasting" money on but I would take Hill over Stave any day.
Did you not watch how bad Stave played against the 2nd/3rd teams no less. Hill outplayed him and that was against seattles first team defense no less. There's not even a comparison between the two

Stave is not good.

Also, you don't "fork" over money on backup quarterbacks. That's a proposition of a losing team. Especially teams with great defenses. Cardinals, Seahawks, Broncos, Panthers...Great defenses, look at their backups and tell me how they're paying these backups like that. You don't do it. Period.

Bad teams and disorderly franchises have high priced/would be starters as their #2.

Looking at his wife's twitter account  apparently he turned down a few offers.

Interesting.

I hope it works out for him in SF I could actually see him being a good fit in Kelly's offense. I realize he's not likely to get more than the #3 job right now since he was just signed. However, I would think if he made the roster, he'd have a chance to move up the depth chart past Gabbert once he had time in the system.

I just wish him well.

I wish Ponder well! I think with the right team he could be a solid backup.

He certainly seems like a good guy.

Thanks for the info!

I'd take Gabbert over Ponder, any day of the week, but obviously Blaine is no whiz kid either.

Incredible to me that the Niners didn't have a QB they liked in the draft enough to draft.

I'd probably take Ponder if I really had to choose. He's proven he can go 10-6 with Adrian Peterson and a slightly above average defense and not screw it up too bad. Add Zimmer's D and you could probably even win a playoff game against the Redskins.
