It is a depth signing though. Free agency comes before the draft so you have to make sure that you have all your supplemental players in place so that you're not drafting for depth. The one-year deal doesn't suggest that they're for sure making him a starter, but you need bodies. He may start, but only as a bridge.

Anyone else seeing rumors that Verner may have signed or agreed to sign with someone and will announce it on Tuesday? And that it doesn't doesn't like that someone is us? He should have been the #1 priority of the Vikings. This is just a rumor, no idea if its true, I saw it on a FB page so it prolly isn't.

He's a great player, but pricey. This draft is deep with CB's, so if they spend heavily, I think I would still prefer Johnson.

I don't see anything but maybe the Jets? They just released Cromartie.

With how many teams have been in contact with Verner, I wouldn't be surprised if he priced himself out of the Vikings interest, or if he just chose to go somewhere else. There is a strong class of corners in both free agency and the draft. Verner was the best and a nice fit here, but if he doesn't sign here, there is still a number of other strong options who will be cheaper. I don't think he's the type of elite corner that you should go all in to sign no matter the cost anyways.

No, he definitely isn't. He's been great once, the year before he was to become a FA, and he wants to be paid like he's been established as a great CB. Classic contract year performer who ends up getting overpaid. It happens in every sport, and teams still don't learn their lessons. With that said, if they got him at a decent rate, I wouldn't be too disappointed.

Demi, give it a rest. We know you don't like 99% of the moves the Vikings make. I'm not too fired up about the Brinkley signing either, but I don't go pissing in everyone's Cheerios about it. Why do you get so worked up over a BACKUP anyway?

You think that he agrees one percent of the time :?: That would be generous to say the least

This is all I'm seeing on Verner so far. I think we are still very much in the running!
The NY Daily News reports free agent CB Alterraun Verner "isn't planning any visits," and intends to sign with a team "shortly after the market opens" on Tuesday.
It's possible he already has a deal in place with a team. The Redskins, Giants, Rams, Jets, and Vikings are among the clubs known to have interest in Verner. Verner had to love seeing the Packers give Sam Shields $39 million over four seasons on Saturday. Verner is younger than Shields, and a superior corner.

I would rather have Vontae Davis than Verner. Sounds like he will likely resign with Indy, though.

Larry Dean - LB - Vikings

Vikings re-signed LB Larry Dean.

Dean avoids a restricted free agent tender by signing on the dotted line. The core special teamer had 13 tackles and two forced fumbles last season.

The more I look into the salary cap for teams and all this Alterraun Verner talk, I feel more and more confident we will sign him. Currently, the teams going after Verner are MIN, WAS, NYJ, NYG, STL, DET, and PIT.

Approximate cap space:
MIN ~$28 million
NYJ ~$31 million
WAS ~$20 million
NYG ~$18 million
PIT ~$12 million
DET ~$10 million
STL ~$10 million

...now I'm figuring Verner is going to command close to $10 million a year which would completely eliminate some teams above out of the running. The only teams I think I would be worried about are the Jets and Redskins. However today, the Jets have just inquired about Captain Munnerlyn and the Redskins have inquired about Corey Graham and Aqib Talib has been on their radar since Saturday. Are these any indication that Verner might already be off the market (as in, we made him an offer)? Could be who knows but I'm starting to get that sense.

I just saw a tweet last night that said it was reported that the Vikings top FA priority this offseason is CB. They haven't shown any interest in anybody outside of Verner and Carroll (that we know of). I can't imagine Spielman will settle for Carroll as the #2 CB. Don't be surpised if we sign Verner tomorrow!! 8)

I'm nervous about Verner because of the competition he's faced. He plays in one of the worst divisions in football and it's in the AFC. Congrats on picking off juggernauts like Schaub, Gabbert, Henne, Kerry Collins, Geno Smith, etc but can you hang with Cutler, Rodgers, Stafford and a stacked NFC? I think AFC guys get high praises because of the marginal talent across the board. Nnamdi was viewed as a top CB along with Brandon Flowers a couple of years ago. Both AFC guys who went to NFC teams and now are viewed as "FA busts".

I want Verner, but I also would love Vontae Davis. Davis (like his brother Vernon) has great athletic ability and is physical. I almost think Davis would be a better fit for Zimmer's defense than Verner, but I bet Davis re-ups with Indy.

I share this concern. He'd still be a sizeable upgrade, but I'd have concerns at $10 million/year (is he scheme specific?). I know Peyton can make anyone look foolish, but last year against Denver he allowed 9/11 passes for 115 yards, 1 TD and had 3 penalties. According to PFF, from Weeks 12-14, he allowed 199 yards, a touchdown, and a 107.1 QB rating with just one pass defensed.

FWIW, opposing quarterbacks had a 54.7 QB rating when throwing in Verner's direction last season. He did have 23 PDs, and not all of them were deflecting passes from guys like Schaub. He's also a pretty efficient tackler from what I've read. He'll be overpaid, which is not new.
