A successful coach needs a patient wife, loyal dog, and great quarterback - and not necessarily in that order.

Go get Cousins or Mallet for a 3rd or 4th round pick, the risk is worth the award the sooner the better so you can develop chemistry early this off season with the new coaching staff.

I'm a fan of Shaw. Wouldn't mind him as a late-round developmental guy.

He's a poor man's Jon Kitna. He has admirable qualities (tougness and leadership), but I'd be very surprised if he did anything in the NFL.

+1 Shaw shows a ton of potential and would be a nice 3rd day pickup.

If he lasts long enough, he's the type of player Id love to see the Vikes select late (preferably after selecting another QB prospect much earlier) and start developing as their #3 QB and/or a practice squad QB.

Absolutely. He looked pretty darn good vs. Wisconsin in the Capital One Bowl.

Here is an interesting article matching top QB draft prospects to each team's need.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/nfl- ... -prospects

According to Rob Rang

Best fit: Zach Mettenberger
Good fit: Blake Bortles, Derek Carr
Bad fit: Manziel

Even though I'm one of the forum brothers who believed if Cassel would have been the starter from training camp, and got the support from the coaches, he could/would lead this team back to a winning season. Now then, as much as I don't care for Manziel's jackweed behavior, I'll pull for him, or any other quarterback not named Ponder, who gets under center. When it comes crunch time, the reports, the scouts, the production in college means nothing once in the pros. Anything is possible, good and bad. Go Vikes!

Connor Shaw should definitely be on our radar as a late round pick. Intelligent young man and student of the game. Not necessarily a running QB but enough athleticism to get first downs on the ground. Playing in the SEC you can't question his level of competition. Lacks the ideal measurements of a Pro QB but the numbers speak for themselves, He's a gamer. Poor mans Johnny Manziel.

Practice squad QBs taken in the draft are a gamble. Not whether they'll develop, but whether you'll be able to keep them. Look at what happened with Tyler Thigpen. If the guy shows a hint of potential during the preseason, some other team will grab him before the season ends.

If the Vikings draft two QBs, then they may need to keep both on the 53 man roster and then they damned well better find a better veteran to be a starter. But three new QBs is never pretty.

True, but I don't think that changes whether they're worth drafting. If the Vikings draft 2 QBs and they both look good in the summer, they can keep them both on the roster. If they end up finishing the preseason with 4 QBs who all appear worth keeping, that's really just good news. Pick the best 3 and if the 4th is eligible for the practice squad, put him there and hope nobody signs him. If they do... well, they've already kept the 3 QBs they considered best. :)

Interesting take. Here's his rationale on Manziel being a bad fit:
Poor fit: Manziel

Rationale: Pairing Manziel with Peterson and Patterson might make for a fun fit in a game of Madden, but the Aggies star is significantly shorter and more reliant on improvisation than any of the quarterbacks Turner has ever won with as a head coach or offensive coordinator.
