RIP Tom Clancy

Post by CalVike »

@juliebosman: Tom Clancy's publisher confirms to the NYT that he died last night in a hospital in Baltimore.

He sought to purchase the Vikings from the Gang of 10, but a divorce ended that dream. Red McCombs, purple pride, and low budget football were soon the result. How things might have been different if Tom Clancy or Denny Green had realized their dreams of a purchase from the Gang of 10. How things change ... That purchase price was around $200MM if memory serves, the Wilfs purchased for $600MM, and the team is now worth near $1B due to the fleecing of Minnesota taxpayers. This is in no way an industry that requires public subsidies in any way. But they are a popular monopoly that will get them due to efforts of Roger Goodell and Eric Grubman, though not in California. LA continues to hold out for its terms, no big loss take it from one who lives here. RIP Tom Clancy, you narrowly missed a gravy train that few would have predicted when the Gang of 10 could not sell out the dome even in winning seasons in the 1990s.

RIP, Mr. Clancy... you know he was a Vikings fan, because in one of his novels, the Vikings were playing in the Super Bowl against the Chargers... the Chargers were leading, but the Vikes were making a furious comeback to win the game when a bunch of terrorists detonated a nuclear bomb at the stadium. That would be just our luck. :steamed:

Yeah, Tom Clancy did reveal that he was a fan of the Vikings. I wish he could have bought the stadium over Red.

Rest in peace, Mr. Clancy.

He was a great author but he might have moved the team, who knows.

Wish he had bought the Vikings. With an owner that would have spent some cash on some defense we would have won a Super Bowl or 2 in the early Moss years.

Great man and author. I too wish he had bought the Vikes, instead of the Wilf's.
