Lol. The kid had 9 runs of 15 or more yards in over 300 attempts. He's slow. He may be a good player but he wasn't the best player we could have gotten at that 17 or with the last pick in the 3rd. He's not even the best RB we could have gotten. It was a bad pick. Kid will play hard, he will have score some touchdowns but we could have done better.

Isn't his 4.9ypc more impressive if he's only had 9 runs of 15yds or more? Vikings needed a bruiser and a short yardage back since Murray left. I know your argument is there were better available, but I think he's going make an impact this year, esp with how much games Cook has missed.YikesVikes wrote: ↑Sun Apr 28, 2019 1:52 am Lol. Re: 3rd Round Pick: RB Alexander Mattison
Nope this is college and his conference is horrible. He's a good player ( didn't know much about him before butting on a game this morning two watch). Here's the issue. He is slow. He may be quicker than fast but he lacks top speed. In the pros.... Those holes getting him 4.9 close to faster. The guys he's carrying for 3 more + yards, are no stronger and hit back. Rb is such a worthless commodity in the NFL. We could have found similar talent later in the draft. What we needed was a 3rd Wr. We are really lacking that.808vikingsfan wrote: ↑Sun Apr 28, 2019 2:25 amIsn't his 4.9ypc more impressive if he's only had 9 runs of 15yds or more? Re: 3rd Round Pick: RB Alexander Mattison
And your "slow" argument I already proved to be false. Running a 4.52 is not a "slow RB". Damien Harris, someone you just said was a better RB to take, ran a 4.57. Are you saying his issue is being slow too? What about Singletary, Montgomery, Jacobs and Snell? Are they all "slow"? Because they ran slower than Mattison did. You have no argument there. He ran like crap at the combine and quickly showed his real speed at his pro day. Nor does he play slow on tape.YikesVikes wrote: ↑Sun Apr 28, 2019 2:31 amNope this is college and his conference is horrible. And RB is such a worthless commodity in the NFL? What? If we didn't have Latavius Murray and Jerick McKinnon in 2017, we would have never gotten to where we did. Even if we simply didn't have Murray we would have never gotten there. And he was our backup!! Look at 2014 when we had Asiata and McKinnon. Our running game was pathetic. There isn't a player on the team that takes more of a beating than a RB. Not having a legit #2, especially when you have a guy that hasn't stayed healthy a full season yet, is straight up stupid. Most of us on here figured we would draft a RB at some point from the middle to late rounds depending on how the board goes. And you say he was over drafted or a reach, he was projected to go in the 4th round and he went with the last pick of the 3rd round....practically the 4th. Not sure how that is a reach. We needed a workhorse type back that could take over like Murray did if Cook was out. That is exactly Mattison. He's a workhorse and durable. I was a fan of him prior to us even drafting him. I did my fantasy dynasty ranking 2 weeks ago and had him as my 4th rated back behind Sanders, Jacobs, and Singletary. Mattison was 4th and Harris was 5th.
Bottom line is, you're just ticked off we didn't draft Hakeem Butler. Yeah I liked Butler too but my guess is, we're going with 2 TE sets more often than not and Irv Smith is going to be that 3rd option. You have no idea what Stefanski and Kubiak are thinking. I would think they would be pounding the table for a 3rd WR if they were that concerned about it. They are looking to fill that void with Smith. You have to remember, this is a completely different offense now compared to Flip's RPO pass happy garbage. Smith is falling into the Jordan Reed role of that offense. They are running Rudy and Smith just like they did Vernon Davis and Jordan Reed in Washington. I am concerned with not have an obvious #3 WR but I'm going to let it play out. We have guys that could fill that role. We could even go out and sign someone still. Who knows but IMO, backup RB is more important than 3rd WR. We're going to be a run first team now. You can't go into the season with Cook and a bunch of bums behind him. If you're switching for a pass happy team to a run first team, what would you want more, a solid backup RB behind a fragile starter, or a 3rd WR behind Thielen and Diggs? I go with RB any day of the week.

I think we could have done better at running back, the guy struggled playing against bigger schools.
I hope it doesn't happen but if Cook has to miss time Mattison won't be no replacement.
How many people even heard of the guy before he got drafted...very few.

He had 1400 yards and 17 TDs. If a fan didn't hear of him, that's on them I guess. I'm not sure how you can say he won't be a replacement for Cook if he goes down when you literally just admitted you never heard of him and probably never watched film on him? Nor have you even seen him on the field yet. Did you know who Latavius Murray was coming out of the draft? I did because I played against him but many fans out there didn't have a clue who he was. Along with other RBs that have made it over the years. If you don't follow CFB closely and you don't hear of him, doesn't make him a bad pick.halfgiz wrote: ↑Sun Apr 28, 2019 9:42 am I think we could have done better at running back, the guy struggled playing against bigger schools.

Re: 3rd Round Pick: RB Alexander Mattison
Nobody as in who? Analysts? How many 3rd round picks did analysts get right? They barely got half the first round picks correct let alone 3rd round picks. I’m not sure what that has to do with anything. He went with the last pick in the 3rd. One pick away from being a 4th rounder and that’s where he was projected to go. Either way, projections for mid rounders were so inconsistent as they always are. Nobody expected Jawaan Taylor to fall way down to the 2nd but he did. And the early picks are much easier to predict than the late ones. I mean did anyone have us picking Irv Smith in the 2nd? Not that I ever saw. Does that mean it was a bad pick because nobody had us picking him there? No.halfgiz wrote: ↑Sun Apr 28, 2019 11:31 amNobody had us picking him in the 3rd...Pondering Her Percy wrote: ↑Sun Apr 28, 2019 10:19 am

The kid might work out. But I'm still not a fan of the 3rd round.

Agreed. For the guys that didnt like the pick, watch the film on him. He excels in tight windows, has excellent footwork and catches the ball well. I mean honestly, I think he is a better 3rd round pick than McKinnon was. McKinnon was a freak athlete with great speed but he couldnt ever carry a load. Mattison carried the ball over 30 times in 3 different games this year. One game he hit 40 carries. This guy can pound the rock and wear you down. Similar to what Murray could do but he has more shiftiness than Murray ever did. The more I think about it, I look at him as a combination of Murray and McKinnon. He can pound the rock and carry a load like Murray and can make people miss and catch the ball like McKinnon.

He helps as a short yardage specialist and also as a physical presence. The Vikings are finally beginning to establish an offensive identity instead of a revolving door of offensive philosophies. Being able to pick players that fit in your system requires some clarity and stability on the offensive side of the ball. Our first four picks this year clearly fit our system. I'm so excited about Bradbury, Sumia and Mattison.Pondering Her Percy wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 11:17 amAgreed. For the guys that didnt like the pick, watch the film on him. Re: 3rd Round Pick: RB Alexander Mattison
Still early too tell but add in a healthy Cook and the Vikings may finally have a reliable running game. Yeah, it will relieve pressure off of Cousins, but I'm excited to see how much it will help an already good defense. Really sounds like one of the Vikings main objectives were to improve the short distance downs.fiestavike wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 11:40 amHe helps as a short yardage specialist and also as a physical presence. Re: 3rd Round Pick: RB Alexander Mattison
Same here. I feel the same way with Smith. He's that atheltic, vertical threat TE we never had with Rudy. I've seen more than once where analysts had Smith rated ahead of Fant. Take it with a grain of salt but still. Bradbury and Samia both have that nastiness to them which this OL hasnt had in a very long time. Mattison is exactly what you said above. I would have never guessed we go 4 offensive guys in the first 4 picks and if someone told me we would, I dont think I'd agree with it, but it's hard not to agree with these first 4 picks. This team is going to pound the ball and with Cousins ability to throw the ball, Thielen, Diggs, Rudy, Smith and Cook and Mattison also catching out of the backfield, with a much improved OL, I love the looks of our offense right now. Third WR definitely lacks right now but I wonder how much we would utilize one. Thats where I would like to see someone step up like Mitchell, Beebe, etc.fiestavike wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 11:40 amHe helps as a short yardage specialist and also as a physical presence. Re: 3rd Round Pick: RB Alexander Mattison
Bradbury and Samia aren't the kind of players that will knock defenders off the ball, but both excel at reaching defenders with their quickness and athleticism, and then sealing blocks. I can't wait to see O'Neill or Reiff pulling out on lead blocks from the tackle position, and I can't wait to see Cousins bootleg off of that action and have an easy half field read where he can use what he does well to maximum effect.Pondering Her Percy wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 1:03 pmSame here.
