Week 5 Reaction Thread

Post by dead_poet »

U-G-L-Y

- McKinnon was great on the ground (not so much returning kicks)
- The Bradford start was...ill advised
- I'm worried about Diggs' injury. Groins linger and he was non-existent for much of today. I think he may have been more decoy because of this. We can't beat Green Bay with Keenum and without a healthy Diggs.
- Defense was OK. Stupid penalties and I think Waynes is still a sub-average corner.
- Brock...needs to not be on special teams
- Griffen needs to chill out with the offsides
- Offensive line wasn't great in this one, particularly Remmers, Elflein and Berger.
- Harry!
- I'm coming around on Barr. He made some good plays tonight.

Brock needs to be either cut or deactivated. Griffen is pissing me off. Waynes is beginning to annoy me.
McKinnon was the man tonight. He took and delivered some huge hits. Elflein is a stud.

@christomasson Mike Zimmer says Sam Bradford aggravated his injury on a play when he was tackled

I win is a win.

I think we have also seen the last game of Sam Bradford's career. I think seeing Dalvin Cook's ACL injury had more of a psychological impact on him then the bone bruise did. I haven't seen that much QB panic since Blaine Gabbert's rookie season.

@christomasson Mike zimmer said there was no doubt all week Bradford would play. Vikings limited Bradford in practice on purpose. zimmer said medically Bradford fine to play. zimmer doesn't know how long Bradford could be out but doesn't think it's major
Zimmer said he considered taking him out earlier but just didn't. (Ugh)
@ProFootballDoc #Bradford could be out till after bye. Same time #Bridgewater could be back after 3 week practice window.

I'll give the O-line a slight pass. They were much better in pass protection after Bradford went out. And they did pave the way for 159 yards rushing.

Nine penalties will kill us in most games, especially four for first downs. Some of that can be attributed to the worst officiating crew in the NFL, but we need to clean that up.

I was encouraged that we didn't let Jordan Howard go off. I'll take giving him 76 yards, given how he lit us up for nearly 300 in two games last year. The defense did a nice job of adjusting to Trubisky after the first couple of drives. I almost feel sorry for the kid. That has to be the worst WR corps in the league. They have nothing.

Props to Kai Forbath. He's taken a lot of heat, but he made the kicks we needed today.

Really nice game for Jet McKinnon. Had 95 yards rushing and 146 yards of total offense, plus 50 yards in kick returns.

An ugly win, but a division win on the road. Given that we had zero division road wins last year, I'll take it.

A win is a win. Everyone knows we struggle there. I said it early in the week I didnt feel good about it. Again, this defense is always going to keep us in games. I almost wish we just gave Bradford another week.

Great play by Harry but again, it was a pass that was actually to him. Barr's was way outside and Sendejo's was too high IMO.

Best I've ever seen McKinnon run but I still don't trust him. We need Murray more on early downs. Everyone seems to forget Murray had 12 TDs last year. And if they gave him the ball as much as they did the year before, he wouldve ran for over 1000. Murray was running way better than McKinnon early. He had 25 yards on his first 6 carries. Then they eased off some it seemed. McKinnon isn't an early down back IMO and will never be. I like mixing him in but Murray needs to be the early down guy. We could get a little thunder and lighting combo with them.

I'm glad Johnson got some time. Dumb penalty but was there to make the play. Would like to see more of him. I like how Waynes played toward the end. Barr had some nice plays tonight as well.

Overall, I'll take the win. Not going to sit here and complain because we always struggle in Chicago.

Division game on the road. Can't get any sweeter than that. The Vikings needed this win. Liked the way they fought the entire game.

Good:
Mckinnon. Good vision tonight. Something he usually struggles with.
Keenum. Just Solid. Couple of late throws but overall he was almost perfect.
OL. Good run blocking tonight. Really helps with an athletic center. Only sacks they gave up was when Bradford was back there. Gave Keenum time.
Rudolph. Under appreciated, at least by me. Good solid game.
The entire D. With how bad the FP was in the first half, I can't believe they didn't give up a point. Griffen and Smith with huge takeaways. Run D was excellent. Team effort.
Special Teams. Punt and kickoff coverage solid when needed.

Bad:
Special Teams. TD on the fake punt. Made the game closer than it needed to be.
Penalties. Thought a bunch were ticky tack but I'm guessing CHI had at least 4 first downs due to penalty.
Bradford. He shouldn't have practiced or played this week.
Mckinnon on KR.
Loss of containment on boot legs. Have to fix this or Rodgers will kill the Vikings next week.

Bradford was clearly not ready for prime time. The one play where he crumpled in the fetal position from nothing was gut-wrenching. This might have retarded progress of his recovery by a month or more. Thank God Zimmer finally yanked him. I understand its an important divisional game in prime time, but the opponent is fielding a rookie QB passing to nobodies and is on its 5th string LB as the shot caller.

The refs were wearing purple tonight in my opinion. We got bailed out a lot. The Bears could have had a 16-0 lead in the first half possibly. Trubisky was a drop and a penalty away from going 9/9 for over 100 yards in the early going. He was fairly well shut down after that, though. 12-25, 128 yards and a back-breaking pick and a crucial strip-sack. Pretty much every point they got was fluky BS. The defense did a fine job but needs to cool it with terrible penalties. Like the Tom Johnson face mask that was negated, Griffin jumping, etc. Kind of sloppy! And we only got 1 sack!

Murray is underperforming and McKinnon played excellently. Kyle Rudolph didn't have a hot stat line but he had a bunch of crucial third down conversions and an excellent TD where he was as open as I have ever seen anybody.

Diggs with a groin injury when the next game is the Packers game is obviously awful.

It was the definition of an ugly win.

As I mentioned in the game thread, I'm viewing the Vikings as being in survival mode so any win is good. If they can get another win or two, they'll be good going into the bye with two options at QB.

Defense did a good job tonight with 2 turnovers deep in Chicago territory and giving up only 7 pts, which was a bit of a fluke play.

Special teams still leaves a lot to desire. They're good in coverage but all our kickers and punters have been suspect under Priefer and now the squad is getting hit with penalties and falling for fake punts. KR is also a big issue, if McKinnon isn't giving us horrible field position he's putting the ball on the ground.

On offense there's a difference between hurt and rust. It was pretty evident which it was tonight and it shouldn't have taken an entire half to figure it out. Sam needs to be REALLY ready or else just stick with Keenum until the bye.

Not to split hairs, but I disagree. Smith undercut the receiver's route and put himself in perfect position to make the interception, but that's a completion to the Bears receiver if the "Hit man" doesn't make his play. Your post almost makes it sound like the QB "missed" his receiver and threw right to Smith instead. Maybe I misunderstood(?)

I didn't mean it like that. Basically that he was in the position to make an easy catch. And given the fact that guys complained about Barr not picking off that screen. He undercut it and made a great play on it but Trubisky threw a dart at him from 5 feet away way to his outside hand. Balls like that aren't really catchable unless you make some kind of crazy play.

More or less of Harry missed that, then yeah definitely a dropped INT. But as for Barr and Sendejo, those weren't "dropped ints" IMO

Didn't he have groin issues last year? Hope to see more of Floyd next week. Sadly I'm losing hope for Treadwell.
