Vikings secondary 2015/2016

Post by jackal »

I wouldn't be surprised to see us have eight or more guys in this group.

Zimmer always collected Corners in previous teams ...

Corners
Rhodes
Waynes
Newman
Robison

Captain out
Prater special teams
Price out
Carter Jalil out
Van Dyke Demrcus out

Safety

Smith Harrison
Melton
Mays
Sendejo

Exum out
Dixon Ahmad out

That leaves us ten secondary players left out 16 currently
with much draft and undrafted free agents still possibly added

Not to be that guy, but I count 9 ? 4 CB, Prater on ST, and 4 S.
I like Exum of the group you cut. He's young and a former CB moved to S.
Obviously I do not see the every day work of these guys nor do I have a .00001% of the secondary knowledge that Zimmer does, and I was a football coach.
I was not a Waynes fan at #11, but probably no one willing to trade up when Gurley
It does however make me happy to know that we have 2 potential shutdown CB's.
Now we need to be able to pressure the QB or having lockdown guys does us No Good.
Maybe a trade up for Randy Gregory today ?

Captain won't be cut. He's the only guy on the roster that can cover the slot with any degree of effectiveness.

I agree that Captain isn't going to be cut, but is anybody going to acknowledge that our starting safety from last year isn't even on the list?

I wouldn't count Price out just yet, he got a good amount of playing time last year for a 7th rounder.

btw there's nobody with the name of "Melton" on the roster... was that supposed to be Blanton?

and there's 0 chance IMO that Exum is gone this off season. In one of Spielman's pressers over the weekend he specifically mentioned Exum as a player they're very excited about this off season, I have a feeling he's the favorite to be starting opposite Harrison

Was just about to bring up the same thing about Exum. Spielman brought his name up twice, unprovoked.

Was very happy to hear that. I have much higher expectations of him than a typical 6th round pick. May be exactly what they need to complement Harrison Smith.

I'm pretty interested to see what the UDFA safety from Virginia can do - Anthony Harris, IIRC. Safety seems to be one of those positions where brains and instinct trump athletic ability, so you just have to get a guy into the game and see how he reacts.

If I remember correctly, this is his second year back off a knee injury?

There is a lot of talent competing in that defensive secondary. I love how many guys with big upside we have stocked that unit with. I suspect some more journeymen calibur guys like Blanton and Sendejo will get walking papers this year.

Minnesota Vikings: Antone Exum shows promise at safety

http://www.twincities.com/vikings/ci_28 ... -at-safety
Minnesota selected Antone Exum in the sixth round last year. General manager Rick Spielman said after the draft concluded Saturday that Exum is making great progress.
"Exum from last year, who make the conversion from corner to safety, we're very excited about the progress he has made,'' Spielman said. "Also, with Blanton and (Andrew) Sendejo I think we know what those guys are, but Exum is someone we're definitely going to be keep a close eye on.''

Pump the Brakes on Xavier Rhodes Hype Train, CB Has Work to Do

Conclusion

Rhodes is an average starter with the potential to become much more.

Average is a term that has become a negative over recent years. Because of the widespread league coverage and the extreme opinions that sell ad spaces, calling any player average is received as a slight. Yet, being an average starter in the NFL at any position is a great achievement.

Being average means that you are better than half of the players starting at the position across all 32 rosters. An average starter is a valuable player. Rhodes is a valuable player. He is entering a crucial stage of his career as the next two or three years are going to determine just how valuable he can ultimately be.

There is still work to do.
