2014- put a bow on it
So, now that it's all said and done, how did you think the Vikings graded out this year, all things considered? I say C-, pretty much the record made it easy to call it that way. Definitely some areas grade out better than that but if we had 53 X-men Rhodes probably be undefeated and on our way to the Super Bowl.
Don't hate on my Buckeyes. Some of the best Vikings went to Ohio State.

I wanted to say D+ but with all of the injuries that would not be a fair assessment.PurpleMustReign wrote:I would say higher than that, maybe a C+. I'll post more thoughts later when i am on my laptop and it us easier to type.

Re: 2014- put a bow on it
I'll be the optimist and say B+.
Before the season, I said if the defense didn't improve, we'd be in real trouble. And that was assuming Peterson, Cassell, and Rudolph would play, the O-line would be intact, and Patterson would be a playmaker. None of those things happened, yet we managed to finish 7-9. Why? Because the defense took a big step forward. Our points allowed dropped by nearly 9 ppg, and we found a way to hold down the offenses in our division (minus the October debacle in Green Bay).
Get healthy, pick up some pieces, and we're going to be in playoff contention.

I was saying 7-9 before the season started - and that was with Cassel and Peterson playing prominent roles. Based on everything that happened this season, I am disappointed that we have another losing season, but, this team did well.

Overall, I'd give them a C. They finished right about where I expected them to finish, took some steps forward, took some steps back, but managed to climb out of last place. I think they have a lot of work to do this offseason if their goal is to become a playoff team in 2015.CbusVikesFan wrote:So, now that it's all said and done, how did you think the Vikings graded out this year, all things considered? Considering all the injuries? They finished right about where I expected them to finish
Re: 2014- put a bow on it
Well, I assumed they'd have to deal with injuries so to the minimal extent that stuff can be predicted, yes. I figured they would finish right around .500, give or take a game. They finished right in that range. If they'd had an injury-free season, maybe they would have finished a game or two better but who knows?Demi wrote: Considering all the injuries?

Well on one hand our defense wasn't really all that hard to watch, we had some competence at QB and all, but I can't help but come away disappointed in our offense as a whole.
Good year though, I didn't have that "here we go again" feeling very much this year when watching, and I'm optimistic going forward with the defense, our coaching staff, and Teddy especially.

Re: 2014- put a bow on it
I would go with a C-. I had high expectations for the Vikings, getting both Zimmer and Teddy, who I really wanted on this team. But the offense sputtered too often, and STILL doesn't have that go for the throat attitude while they have the lead. I am not sold on Norv.
AD pretty much soured things up right away. Hard for Norv to have a game plan with our main weapon being gone, and his whole dealings with the NFL so screwed up (thanks Goodell!).
CP was so much worse on everything he did. I cant believe the regression. I hope we can get our money back from him and some team really wants a former ST specialist. OFC, I don't want to just release him, but he needs to live in the receiver camps all summer and fall.
I didn't like (to put it mildly) some of Rick's FA's. Jennings (honestly he is so overpaid for just an average old WR). Joseph, looked like a good deal, turned out, not so much. No rush, no stuff. And Captain. 3 strike outs there. And they were getting top dollar.
Then there were some ups like Teddy. Johnson (wr) looks pretty good. I think Kalil shaped up near the end. As did Johnson (G). Berger looks good, as does Sully. But then, our Dline didn't like its former self. Even Walsh took a step back.
Please Rick, no more former Packers. Please. Or WRs from the Bear. Look a few states further down.

Re: 2014- put a bow on it
You say that, yet he had very, very similar statistics he had when he was at the Giants. Also, today on KFAN, Pete Bersich said that when he was in NY, he was consistently lining up over offensive guards, however now, he has been lining up over the center and in the A gaps. Essentially, Bersich was saying it was a new position for him and after talking to Joseph, he said he is continuing to learn under Zimmer's scheme. By no means am I saying Joseph lit the world on fire, but he was just as consistent this year as he was in NY for the most part.PurpleKoolaid wrote:Joseph, looked like a good deal, turned out, not so much. (Not counting his rookie season since he didnt play much)....
-He was averaging 55 tackles per year, this year he had 48
-He was averaging 3 sacks per year, this year he had 3
-He was averaging 1.5 passes defended per year, this year he had 1
-He was averaging 3 stuffs per year, this year he had 3
Mind you, there were a few games he wasn't 100% either, due to being shot. This is his first year in Zimmer's scheme. He doesn't worry me whatsoever. I think he will be even better next year.

I feel for Spielman... If we win a Super Bowl while he is the GM, people will still complain.

After winning first ever Superbowl, Minnesota Vikings fire Spielman.
"Mr. Wilf, why, after building a Superbowl champion did you decide that Rick Spielman deserved to get fired."
"Well he did draft Christian Ponder and uhhhh well Greg Jennings gets paid a lot.... and John Carlson"

Minnesota wins three out of five super bowls 2016-2021

Re: 2014- put a bow on it
C rate defense, d rate offense. I give them high d overall. Problems are pretty obvious; o line, wr, rb, punter, lb, one more above average corner/safety would be nice. If they keep building on this defense, make it a top 5, and somehow patch the offense, this can be a very dangerous team.
