Vikings cut 5 players

S Ahmad Dixon
RB Henry Josey
TE Ryan Otten
T Antonio Richardson
G Austin Wentworth

No real surprises hear. I'm a little disappointed to see Tiny get cut. Thought he could at least be a decent backup, but I did see it coming with the way the draft played out.

Looks like I was little late. Sucks to hear about Richardsons knees being so bad. Will only be a matter of time till he's physically unable to play.

That's too bad about Tiny, I think he had a good shot at a roster position otherwise.

That is a bummer for Tiny, and I'm also bummed for Henry Josey. He probably never stood a chance, but I've always really like him.

I think I am the only one that thought Wentworth showed a little progress. Sucks about Richardson too.

Of the guys we waived recently I thought Wentworth was by far the most surprising. Richardson was always 50-50 based on his sketchy knees. Wentworth played in 7 games last year so one would think he would have at least secured a spot on the 90 man roster going into camp (or was that an indication of just how poor our OL depth was last year?).

This might have something to do with his release:
The Vikings shifted Austin Wentworth from waived Non-football illness to Reserve Non-football illness
I have been looking for some more info on this but haven't found any.

He could have just been a casualty of the numbers game as well. We have plenty of bodies on the OL going into camp:
Locks (5):
Sullivan, Kalil, Loadholt, Fusco and Berger
Near Locks (2):
Yankey and Clemmings
Bubble Guys: (4)
Mike Harris, Carter Bykowski and our two lower round draft choices, Tyrus Thompson and Auistin Shepard
Camp Fodder (4):
This year's UDFAs: Jesse Somsel, Bobby Vardaro, Zac Kern and Tom Farniok
Wildcard (1) : Babatunde Aiyegbusi

We'll likely carry 8-9 OL on the 53 man roster. 9 guys competing for one or two spots.

@mattvensel The #Vikings waived Kain Colter and Jesse Somsel. No word on who will replace them. They had a bunch of tryout guys in for rookie minicamp.

@GoesslingESPN #Vikings announce they've signed former #Gophers receiver Isaac Fruechte, who tried out with them last weekend.

Kind of a bummer. I like Kain as a football player/athlete. I hope somewhere along the road he gets a shot somewhere where he has a chance to sneak in to some playing time.

Wentworth's career is also over after just one season.
Guard Austin Wentworth, who was waived by the Vikings last week and then put on the team’s reserve/non-football illness list, must end his football career after one NFL season because of a medical condition, sources told the Pioneer Press.

The nature of the condition was not disclosed. It is something a source said unexpectedly came up but something that Wentworth, 25, should be able to overcome and be “OK long term.’’

That's rough. Best of luck to both him and Tiny.
