Xavier Rhodes: May not be that good?

Post by NextQuestion »

I feel like he's getting the Chris Cook treatment from fans now where "WE NEED HIM". He has a couple of nice pass break ups but he is 90% of the time not looking for the ball.

I had some questions coming into the season. But after watching him in preseason, and trying to analyze our new secondary in these first two weeks on film, I think hes doing a great job. You are completely right, that he needs to trust his positions and turn his head quicker. But at the same time, no TDs allowed so far.. We held tom Brady to under 200 yds in a blowout.
I'm excited about our defense.

2 of the Pass interference calls on Rhodes were, in my opinion, garbage calls. But they got called, nonetheless. Zim, will be hard on Xav to get into slightly better positions, and make the proper tweaks. But I like what I've seen thus far.

I'm more worried about Blanton and Captain to be honest. Cap will make some huge plays, but he also loses his assignments sometimes

Brady didn't have to pass all that much because 1.) They ran the ball extremely well 2.) turnovers put them inside our side of the 50 almost every single time. Rhodes was absolutely torched on 3rd & 15 bu Julian Edelman and wasn't near the ball.

I didn't think he had a very good game but I'm not too worried about him. Corner is one of the tougher positions in the NFL to master. It can take several years and he's just beginning his second season. I expect more growing pains this year but I think he'll continue to flash playmaking ability as well.

I agree that we could not find an answer for #11.. That was ridiculous, but if you look at the plays, Robert Blanton, clearly had deep 1/2's on one. It was more missed assignments than Xavier getting torched I promise you.

I'm gonna go back and try to analyze how effectively we played defensively. And what happened with 11

Purplemania wrote:Rhodes didn't do that well last Sunday, but he didn't do terrible. The two P.I. were questionable. One of them a ref said "Pass Interference on #29, he wasn't looking for the ball" when in fact he did look for the ball and BATTED IT DOWN!
I've seen that point made a few times but if you watch the play again, I thin the ref was referring to what happened before Rhodes batted the ball. If I remember correctly, he was making contact with the receiver with his back to the ball. Then he turned at the last minute and batted it away. It looked like PI to me but I think the ref;s explanation was deceptive.

That was my perception during the game anyway.

Man! I would not want to be a DB in today league. The retired vets much just sit and shake their heads in disgust at the current rules. The League leadership is going to kill this game off with their absurd rule changes. Rhodes is doing fine for a young player in one of the toughest positions to master, especially at a time when they are making it near impossible to defend.
I agree with the previous ost who said that the RUN D is a bigger worry. The Pats are not a strong running team but we sure made them lok impressive, didn't we. The Saints are likely a better running team and I am afraid we will get steam-rolled next week.

Great post! as a 7-years removed WR/CB, I shake my head at the way that dynamic is headed...

If you watched him play in week 4 - you would delete this thread entirely or change it to Xavier Rhodes: Home run at CB ??

This kid made play after play after play yesterday- Batting down so many balls, not giving up the big play, and BATTLING with Julio-
Kid is awesome, and going to be one of the best IMO

I particularly loved in the 3rd quarter when they pulled a guard, did a sweep to Jackson to the left-side of the field...
Xavier came up from 10 yards deep, and Torpedo'd Jackson in the backfield for a TFL.. Stud baller

Zim said he has "Extremely high" expectations for Harrison & Xavier

IMO - these should both be multiple pro-bowl guys.

I agree 84. He had a great game yesterday, lots of breakups and good tackles. I think he will be a stud in this league. Think of it this way..... ask yourself "who on this team could do better?"

You know Norv, I was thinking that myself..
Coming into the season, I really thought Captain would emerge as our best corner, and although he has played decent for us. I was just flabberghasted and disgusted by his missed tackle on Devin Hester yesterday. He had the opportunity to come up and make a huge play, shut the drive down, etc. But guys...... He made THE sorriest excuse of an attempted tackle I saw all day. I mean just did not try to wrap up at all. Then the next drive, just gets shut down - blocked out of the play - on Antone Smith's TD run.

I was hoping he would be that 'Physical' Presence in our secondary, the way Antoine was for us for so many years. But It seems Harrison and Xavier are the boys who lay the wood for us back there. I'm hoping Cap can rebound and give us some of those pick-sixes he spoiled Carolina with last year.

Xavier definitely had a great game, and it kind of illustrates how overboard some people were going when we were losing. Any young player who had a couple rough plays was suddenly in question of being a bust.

Pretty happy with Rhodes, but I do think he grabs too much. Gotta cut out those penalties especially with how things are getting called now

Rhodes chose a good day to have his best game as a pro. Hats off to him against one of the toughest QB/WR combinations in the league. He still toes the line with his physicality, but I think even if you're going to be penalized for it occasionally, it's the way you have to play.

Also (and I can't believe I'm saying this) Josh Robinson has surprised me this season so far. Likely a combination of scheme, returning to the outside and Zimmer's tutelage, but so far it's a big turnaround from one of the biggest disappointments last season. If Robinson can truly turn it around, it will make drafting a corner in 2015 go from a high priority to a moderate one.
