I've never heard it put better...
But to be honest, Manziel looks to me to be the top QB in this draft. Then again, I find the QB position nearly impossible to predict. I humbly admit that I have been wrong on plenty of college players, especially QBs!
Happy New Year Vikings fans!
Happy New Year!
Manziel really embodies the difficulty of evaluating potential pro QBs. He absolutely has the "it" factor and his performance and productivity as a college QB are inarguable. However, his style and size are less than ideal for the NFL so how will he do at the next level? QBs like Brees and Wilson fell due to their size but Brees could easily end up in the Hall of Fame and he looked like he had that potential even as a college QB. He was fantastic. I didn't think Wilson was the college QB Brees was but he clearly had some special qualities and was a productive winner. He slipped due to his size and concerns about his ability to translate college success into NFL success.
I don't know what to think about Manziel's game translating to the NFL. The concerns about that are legitimate but he sure looks like he'd be worth a roll of the dice, doesn't he? The guy is a leader and a playmaker. He's a natural. Is there a better quality to have in a quarterback?
Manziel is a exciting and fun football player, I wouldn't be hell bent out of shape if we drafted him, but let's not reach again......a.k.a ponder, media hypes up players. I would rather take a for sure thing with our 8 pick then draft a potential high reward but also bust. We have had enough disappointments drafting QB's, signing crap free agent QB's. We need to start over, allen will be gone, williams too. We have so many holes to fill to take a chance on being risky. We need a DT, CB, LB, OG, and of course a QB.... but why not one more bad year and we can have mariota or wineston. But I'm 28 and have time to wait. By the way Patterson what a steal of pick.

Picking 8th I do not think there is such a thing as a sure thing. If JF is there then the Vikes should take him. If not draft, a defensive player.
Do not mistake KINDNESS for WEAKNESS!
Best to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool rather than open it and remove all doubt.
JFB is the only QB I'd feel some what "good" about this team drafting him and that's strictly on his up side. It's probably well known by now but I don't like any of the projected first rounders actually in the first round. To me everyone seems to have the same risk as JFB but hardly any of the upside that he brings. I looked back at all the QB's taken in past years and this one seems strikingly similar to the 2010 QB class. Bradford #1, and then a bunch of bad's (clausen, colt mccoy, mike kafka, john skelton, etc)
I've said before, although somewhat jokingly, he'd be the 2nd QB off the board, but the more I look into these QB's and do my research... I'm not even sure that would surprise me anymore, in fact I kinda think he'll go #1 overall to the Texans to replace Schaub. I don't think Obrien is a Bridgewater kind of guy and I don't see any one else worth the #1 pick. At least with Manziel the gigantic upside may be worth the risk to them. Andre Johnson can fill that Mike Evans role and then with Foster in the back field, Hopkins on the other side, and some decent tight ends I see him doing great there.

Sorry I ment best available player wether it is a DT, DE, CB, LB.... I LOVE barr, nix, mosley, we wont get a chance at clowney. But if we draft derek carr because manziel is gone and we reach again I will be upset. But if brotles is available we can snag him up. Let cassel play for a year or two and have our arron Rodgers. Thou rodgers is like one every 10 or so years QB. He's annoying to watch he is so good. I also think drafting watkins could be interesting

I must not have read your posts closely enough ... I thought I was alone in thinking this QB class is weak and overhyped. Heck, the best future pro (IMO) of the bunch, Marcus Mariota, isn't even coming out.
Could you imagine Jennings, watkins on the outside. Patterson in the slot and backfeild and return game. Draft boyd in the second round let him develop. Then address our defense via free agency and our 2 third round picks. We have a lot of options. But I think it will be huge to get the right coaching staff. Look at the cheifs how they turned everything around.... GO VIKINGS I love my vikes no matter what

Nah you're not alone, I've made a few posts saying as much as well, but it's cool if you haven't seen them. The only thing I'm not sure of yet is if there is a guy who's currently rated in the 2nd or 3rd round that might be that russel wilson "diamond in the rough". At the top though it's very concerning for a team that really needs a QB who picks after about 5 other teams who desperately need QB's.
Dont any of you guys like boyd? We could get him in the second round. Watch him play, his highlights. If we can somehow get him in the second that would be a steal. Or even trade a 3rd rounder to move up in bottom of the first like last year. We could pick up best player available first round. CB, S, DT, DE, I just don't agree reaching for a media hyped QB. Trust me I like JFM, he's exciting, but he loves the spotlight and it can be distracting. AP is our star. I really like boyd in the second or trading up for him in the back end of the first. And we can adress the best player available with our 8th. Or trade down and get ha cliton dix. Tons of fun possibilities
Not a fan of Boyd for the NFL game. I've watched a few of his games this year, and I'm just not sold on him as a pro.
His numbers look good on paper, but IMO they're inflated because Clemson runs so many bubble screens. He's got a strong arm and he's athletic, but he reminds me of Ponder in that he tends to abandon the pass if the pocket breaks down or his first read is covered. Clemson calls a lot of running plays for Boyd, and it scares me that he runs low behind his pads and likes to take/deliver hits.
I'd be OK with him as a 3rd- or 4th-round developmental guy, but not as a first-round, start-right-away kind of QB.

Plus, he just doesn't play as well when he doesn't have the lead. At some point, the Vikings are going to need a QB that can run a no huddle, fast passed, offense.

Edit: Dammit I am getting drunk this is my last 6th post. Happy new year!
Probably the riskiest pick in the draft. I see no middle ground for the guy, he'll either be a total bust or great.
I worry that a lot of his skill won't translate to the NFL. I don't think he'll be able to make that many guys miss in the NFL and his frame is likely to take a beating. I think a lot of his great "moments" are more his receivers bailing him out with great catches on what looks like poor decisions to throw.
On the flip side, watching the guy play just has to make you smile a little. I think Dead Poet was the first to compare him to Favre and I think that is the best analogy in terms of upside. He's a gunslinger. He'll live and die by the risks he takes and it will either be incredibly fun to watch or horribly bad. Whoever drafts him has to buy into his gunslinger mentality. He's not a guy you can coach to be a traditional pocket passer, you either believe he has the magic to do the stuff he does or you pass on him. Trying to mold him into something he's not would be a big mistake.

I think this is less of an issue in this era, QBs really can't be hit much. They have a huge advantage, if a finger brushes a QBs helmet it's 15 yards. Sure if he leaves the pocket, he will take hits, but he has that ability to lessen contact. The one and only thing that should be a concern is actual height, but special players often survive just fine with certain limitations. All that being said, I think the Vikings would have to trade up at this point. I don't see him on the board at 8.
